Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Paediatric Intensive Care Transport (1 post) for 6 months.

The successful applicant will be a highly skilled and knowledgeable paediatric intensive care doctor who is also a competent practitioner in the assessment and management in the transport of the critically ill child. Applicants should be trained in all aspects of paediatric intensive care including emphasis on training in transport medicine. Applicants who have experience of managing service delivery and service change will be especially welcome

the East Midlands Paediatric Transport Service (CoMET) is hosted by University Hospital Leicester and operates from two clinical bases, one in Nottingham and one in Leicester.


Main duties of the job

The balance of the successful applicant’s job plan between the Intensive Care Unit and the Transport Team will be negotiable but will approximately be two thirds unit work and one third transport.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching , research and clinical audit. They will be required to undertake management duties and work in a multidisciplinary team.

Duties will cover transport, ward, service weeks, non-service weeks, emergency work, teaching, research governance and audit

Essential criteria

  • Full GMC Registration - GMC Specialist Registrar for Base Specialty on commencement of post

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • Within 6 months of obtaining CCT for UK trainees on the date of interview or having completed CESR.
  • MRCPCH/FRCA or equivalent
  • CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at point of application.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher professional degree

Clinical Skills /Experience

Essential criteria

  • Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum as part of two years training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved centre/rotation.
  • PICM plus six months (minimum) of anaesthetics (stand alone). OR Experience practicing substantive Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care. OR Equivalent training with evidence that this training has been signed off.
  • Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description.
  • APLS provider
  • Substantial experience in the transfer of critically ill children.

Desirable criteria

  • APLS instructor.
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors

Management Skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service delivery/development.
  • Able to delegate appropriately. Able to work in a team

Desirable criteria

  • Higher management degree or qualification or training.
  • Experience of change management

Teaching

Essential criteria

  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduate doctors

Desirable criteria

  • Completed teaching courses qualifications.
  • Appraisal and assessment training skills

Audit Research

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit.
  • Understanding of clinical governance issues.
  • Ability to assess and apply evidence based research in to everyday clinical practiEvidence of having written/participated in the writing of evidence based guidelines.
  • Commitment to development and adherence to departmental guidelines and protocols

Desirable criteria

  • Formal audit training.
  • Presentations at learned societies.
  • Author of peer reviewed publications

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
