We require a full-time Locum Consultant (40 hours per week) to support the Medical Microbiology Consultant team at Nottingham University Hospitals.

The successful candidate will join a team of 9 Medical Microbiology Consultants based at Nottingham University Hospitals, covering both the Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses.

The post holder’s primary focus will be the delivery of the clinical microbiology service, whilst providing support to antimicrobial stewardship, infection control and clinical lead microbiologists to cover a period of maternity leave. The post-holder will contribute to a 1:8out-of-hourson-call service, including weekends and public holidays.

The applicant will hold (or be within 6 months of obtaining) a CCT or equivalent in Medical Microbiology.

Part-time working may be considered, with modification of the job role in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

This Locum Consultant Medical Microbiologist post is designed to cover a period of maternity leave and support the provision of a high quality infection management service in Nottingham. The Microbiology Laboratory is based at the QMC Campus however clinical duties will be required at both QMC Campus and the City Hospital Campus.

The post holder’s primary focus will be the delivery of the clinical microbiology service, including:

  • Participation in the clinical duty rota
  • Laboratory bench rounds
  • Results interpretation and authorisation
  • Clinical and antibiotic advice on complex microbiological infection
  • Patient consults
  • Specialty ward rounds and MDTs.

As required, the post holder will also be expected to support antimicrobial stewardship, infection control and training and education.

Applicants will be required to have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).

As well as the above, UK trained medical applicants should also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

Working for our organisation

The Microbiology laboratory is a large NHS laboratory serving both NUH campuses, as well as Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and Clinical Commissioning Groups with a total population of ~640,000. The current service workload based on recent activity data is approximately 918,000 with 604,000 bacteriology and 314,000 virology/serology work types a year, two thirds of which is acute hospital diagnostic work and the remaining one third of the work is for general practitioners.

The department is actively involved in the clinical management of microbiological and virological infection with regular ward rounds and liaison with the specialist units, works closely with colleagues in Infectious Diseases and supports antimicrobial stewardship within the trust and community.

A large number of specialties requiring clinical microbiological support are provided in Nottingham including General Medicine, General Surgery, Elderly Care, Critical Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics (including a PICU and two large neonatal units), Clinical Haematology (including bone marrow transplantation), Oncology, Cystic Fibrosis, Renal Dialysis, Renal Transplantation, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases & Genito-Urinary Medicine (both providing HIV services), Paediatric and Adult Neurosurgery, Spinal Surgery, Regional Trauma Centre, Orthopaedics, Burns, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and Cardiac Intensive Care.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee, in collaboration with the other consultants and senior scientists, will be expected to fulfil the following duties within the agreed Job Plan:

  • To provide a comprehensive microbiology service, including full clinical liaison, to:
    • Clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
    • General Practitioners in the Greater Nottingham health community
    • Other users of the Microbiology service in the Greater Nottingham health community
  • To be involved in the collection of epidemiological data in close liaison with Public Health England. To be involved in surveillance and prevention programmes as appropriate.
  • To participate in the development of new microbiological & molecular diagnostic techniques to meet the increasing demands of clinical users. This includes the involvement in investigations of outbreaks of infectious disease and liaison with advice to local CCDCs.
  • To pursue research actively in medical microbiology and its associated epidemiology.
  • To be involved in the training of Specialty trainees, Trust Grade doctors, scientific and BMS staff.
  • To contribute, as required, to the teaching of microbiology to undergraduates and postgraduates within the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham.
  • To take part in Medical Audit and Quality Control within the laboratory and in other fora.
  • To pursue a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) with the Royal College of Pathologists or the Royal College of Physicians and to participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and Consultant appraisals. To contribute to the requirements of Clinical Governance.
  • To participate as appropriate in day-to-day Infection Prevention and Control activities and antimicrobial stewardship activities for the acute NHS and the Greater Nottingham health community. The duties of the Infection Control doctor at NUH are currently held by Dr Nikunj Mahida. The designation of the Infection Control doctors for the acute trust and primary care, Antimicrobial lead Consultant, Training Programme Director and Microbiology Lead Clinician is by mutual agreement between the Heads of Service and the other consultant microbiologists, and is reviewed every 3 years or earlier if required.
  • Share in the administrative duties associated with the running of a clinical laboratory.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview in medical microbiology. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath ideally in medical microbiology by examination or evidence of equivalent training and experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (existing consultants must be able to demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme)

  • MRCP or evidence of equivalent training and experience

Physical skills
