Job Description:

Role Overview

The Literary Agent reports into the Head of Publishing and is responsible for creating publishing opportunities for their own list of authors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquiring authors or potential authors with a digital footprint, in partnership with the Head of Publishing, and signing them to the Gleam Titles roster

  • Work with the Gleam Futures Talent Managers to spot opportunities within the rostered talent for publishing

  • Working with authors to develop commercially viable proposals to take to market

  • Selling proposals to editors including negotiation of commercials and contract negotiation

  • Supporting authors through the publishing process – this may include some editing – to ensure that the final product is the best quality that it can be

  • Work with authors to develop their long-term publishing strategy

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the publishing industry – how it works and who are the key players.

  • Experience in turning ideas into commercially successful books, especially in the digital-first space.

  • Articulate and clear communication whether in person, by phone or by email.

  • Being able to manage key stakeholders (including the authors) so that expectations are always managed as best possible.

  • Being able to foresee potential issues or roadblocks in advance and successfully navigate around those.

  • Being able to adapt behaviour from one author to another author and not taking a one size fits all approach.

  • Stay on top of industry developments and share insights with the wider team that may affect the business or talent.
