Lecturer in Clinical Skills

Job description

The University of South Wales, a member of the Teaching Excellence Alliance, is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Clinical Skills. Working as a member of the School of Applied Sciences, you will be part of the larger Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science.

Based at the Pontypridd campus, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and deliver learning materials, both theoretical and applied practical experiences, with a particular focus on clinical skills on the 1st and 2nd year of the BSc Medical Sciences course. The BSc Medical Sciences degree aims to enable successful graduates to progress to graduate entry medical degrees. The successful candidate will be responsible for the teaching of legal and professional practice in a clinical setting, basic clinical skills (e.g. history taking and clinical examination) and effective communication and self-reflection. These skills are required prior to students undertaking their clinical placements within a local health authority. 2nd year teaching also includes case-based problem solving. The clinical skills and practice are approximately equivalent to those in the first year of a medical degree.

The post is part-time and flexible, we expect the applicant to currently be, or recently, in a clinical/healthcare role. The successful applicant would be expected to maintain their professional registration and continue to engage with professional development ensuring their subject knowledge and teaching practices remain up-to-date.

In line with USW’s Strategic Plan (https://www.southwales.ac.uk/about/our-strategy), the successful candidate would be expected to be involved in research and scholarly activity (which may be professional practice-based) and would continue this clinical/healthcare engagement to deliver evidence-based practice, and/or research-based learning within the curriculum. It is expected that the candidate would engage with activities of the USW Accelerated Development Area (ADA) of Health and Well-being and seek to collaborate internally and externally on relevant projects.

The candidate will need to possess strong mentoring and pastoral care skills. In addition to student interfacing activities, the role will require engagement in various academic administration processes related to quality assurance and enhancement as well as engagement by the candidate in marketing and recruitment activities.

The successful candidate will join a well-established team of staff in the subject area of Biological Sciences and become part of the wider scientific community within the School of Applied Sciences at USW. This position is based at the Pontypridd (Glyntaff) Campus of the University of South Wales.

The terms and conditions of the post (including grade and salary) will be those of the University of South Wales.

Applicants must clearly articulate how they meet each of the selection criteria outlined in the Person Specification when writing their application.

For an informal conversation about this post please contact Dr Martin Powell (martin.powell@southwales.ac.uk).

This is a part-time (0.4) permanent post.
