Introduction

Are you a motivated and talented recently Graduated Civil/Structural Engineer or the Senior Technician looking to progress and develop your career?


We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent Technical Support Officer to join our Highways Structures Team.

About the role

The post holder will be part of a small team which is responsible for the maintenance and delivery of new work projects for Highway Structures within the geographical area of North Somerset.


The role involves providing technical support and assisting the senior engineers within the team to ensure its systems are kept up to date to meet its legal and statutory duties and providing data and reports to support the delivery of annual Revenue & Capital maintenance programmes.


Typical duties will include:


  • Carrying out site inspections to Road Traffic Collision (RTC) sites of Highway Vehicle Restraint Systems including measurements and photographs, production of works orders and managing the required repairing works to the damaged vehicle restraint systems.

  • Collection of all the relevant information from road traffic collisions to vehicle restraint systems and submitting the required information to solicitors for vehicular insurance claims for the damage.
  • Maintaining regular up to date information for the Highway Structures Asset Management system (AMS).
  • Organising and submission of streetworks notices and booking road space to deliver projects within the team.
  • Produce AutoCAD drawings to support larger projects and Engineers.
  • Delivering annual civil engineering maintenance revenue programme of works.
  • Assisting engineers and project teams in delivering Highway Structures Maintenance works.
  • Assisting Highway Structures Inspector with on-site inspections where two person inspections are required.
  • Potentially, organising and delivery of annual General Inspections (GI’s) & Principal Inspections (PI’s) to existing Highways Structures within geographical area of North Somerset Council.

This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closed by 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.


About you

To be successful you will need to be PC literate as you will be working with MS office software (Excel and Word) and the team’s database systems (AMX) and need to be able to interrogate these systems to extract data. The ability to have asset management system experience is desirable, however training will be provided.

An enthusiastic and methodical approach is essential, as is the ability to be flexible in a constantly developing environment with customer care being at the forefront of your everyday working.

The post-holder will be expected on occasion to accompany engineers on site visits around the area and occasionally outside the local authority area to attend meetings etc.

The post holder should be educated to a minimum NVQ level 3.


You will be required to have a valid driving licence to use one of our pool vehicles or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel to visit outlying sites.
