The unit manages Trauma, Congenital Abnormalities, Head and Neck Surgery limited to block dissection, skin cancer, facial reanimation, Breast Reconstruction and provides an acute and elective hand service as well as dealing with miscellaneous “healing problems”. Major burns, cleft lip and palate cases are referred to the Regional Centre at QEHB and Birmingham Children’s Hospital respectively.

The Department has close links with Dermatology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Orthopaedics, General Surgery (particularly Breast Cancer surgery), Paediatrics, Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgery (UHCW), Occupational Therapy (particularly in relation to hand cases), Physiotherapy and Breast Care Nurses.

The Main Duties Of The Post Holder Will Include
  • Responsibility for assisting in providing plastic surgical services to the Trust
  • Examining and clerking in patients prior to both elective and emergency procedures
  • Supporting the Consultant led ward round each morning Monday – Friday
  • Taking responsibility for inpatient care on the ward alongside the Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Senior Wound Care Nurse
  • Completing discharge summaries and request forms for investigation
  • Supporting a 1 in 4 SHO level oncall rota
  • Active involvement and participation in the clinical audit programme
  • Delivery of emergency care in the Hand Assessment Unit
  • Supporting the operating teams in theatre and treatment rooms.
Rota

The SHO level rota runs on a rolling 4 week plan and does not include night working. The hours for each day are;
  • On Call – 0730 – 2030
  • Normal Working Day 0800 - 1700
As the on call you will be expected to respond to the Emergency Department and Ward based escalations. As part of a normal working day we anticipate that following ward rounds you will the opportunity to attend theatres and clinics.
