Science and Technology Facilities Council

Salary: £25,702 to £27,938 per annum (dependent on skills and experience). A Specialist of Allowance of up to £2000 per annum is also available for this role.
Hours: Full time.
Contract Type: Open Ended.
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire.

About the Role:
Health Physics Surveyors (HPSs) are part of the Health Physics and Facility Safety (HPFS) group at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Harwell Campus site and provide a radiation protection monitoring service to STFC personnel, contractors, users of the scientific facilities and visitors. They also support the processing of radioactive wastes that arise from operation of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.

This role is responsible for the routine radiation and radioactive contamination surveys across the ISIS facility as prescribed by survey schedules. You will also be responsible for the production of health physics survey monitoring reports. You will be required to use a variety of radiation protection instrumentation and sampling techniques such as air sampling and liquid sampling. You will also carry our surveillance monitoring and provision of basic radiation protection advice to all personnel undertaking operational work in the accelerator, synchrotron, target stations, experimental facilities and waste storage areas.

Further responsibilities include:

  • Clearance monitoring of equipment, experimental samples and waste prior to removal from designated controlled / supervised areas.
  • Responding to incidents involving radiation and radioactive contamination including support to the UK RADSAFE scheme. This includes providing out of hours support by being part of an on-call scheme.
  • Supporting the programme of collection, characterisation and processing of radioactive waste prior to its safe disposal.
  • Use of specialised plant and equipment when processing radioactive waste.
  • Assisting with the control, movement and accounting of ISIS radioactive machine components
  • Support to the ISIS personal dosimetry service.
  • Support to the production, implementation and review of radiation protection documentation
  • Assisting with the inspection, testing, maintenance and issue of respiratory protective equipment.
  • Support to health physics team leaders in delivering the health physics and radioactive waste processing services.

Person Specification:

The below criteria will be assessed during shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S & I)

Essential:

  • City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 1 or NVQ Radiation Protection Diploma Level 2, or equivalent (S)
  • Experience in using radiation protection instrumentation (S & I)
  • Experience of working in designated radiation and radioactive controlled areas (S & I)
  • Experience in the safe use of hand held power tools such as drills, reciprocating / band saws and croppers (I)
  • Practical experience of wearing personal protective clothing and respiratory protective clothing such as air hoods (S & I)
  • Very good interpersonal skills: ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally with individuals from all levels. (I)
  • Proven teamwork experience (I)
  • Able to use Microsoft Word and Excel (I)
  • Hold a valid UK full driving licence (S & I)

Desirable:

  • City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 2 or equivalent (S)
  • Knowledge of safety hazards of a large scale radiation facility (S & I)
  • Experience in radioactive waste management including processing (S & I)
  • Experience of working in specific radioactive containment structures (I)
  • Solid understanding of the Ionising Radiations Regulation 2017 and associated ACoP (I)
  • Trained to operate an overhead travelling crane and drive forklift trucks (S & I)
  • Special Requirements:
  • Become a classified person as defined in the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (I)
  • Able to wear respiratory protective equipment (I)
  • Willing to provide support outside of normal working hours (I)
