Join us on an internship at GKN and help shape the future of flight

A Truly Global Business

Every day, around the world, we help aircrafts fly further, faster and greener. We’re the world’s leading tier one aerospace supplier of systems and components. With over 15,000 employees across 41 manufacturing sites in 13 countries serving over 90% of the world’s aircraft and engine manufacturers with sales of £2.8bn.

Together as “one GKN” we’re moving our business and industry forward developing technologies that rapidly decarbonise aircraft, and innovating to help build a new generation of planes that produce zero emissions. We’re putting sustainability at the heart of what we do; driving our objective to becoming a net zero greenhouse gas emissions business before 2050!

Our Global Technology Centre

Our new Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and development facility which will act as a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It will include collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy.
About The Project
Additional and exciting opportunities are being offered through our Internship programme supporting our H2GEAR activities, enabling you to work with the fantastic teams that develop the technology with the specific focus on system architecture & integration.

The H2GEAR (Hybrid Hydrogen Electrical Architecture) is a £54M, 5 year collaborative programme with 2 industrial and 3 academic partners part funded by the Aerospace Technology Institute. The programme aims to develop and deliver ground demonstration of a novel zero emission cryogenic hydrogen fuel powertrain suitable for future aircraft applications from 2030.

Our world class H2GEAR team of 50 lead the technology development and manage the system level integration at both aircraft level and main aircraft system level for the powertrain definition. The scope of the system starts with Liquid Hydrogen storage through to the electric motor for propulsion with the benefits of the novel electrical network stretching the performance to as yet, unrealised levels.

Working on the system architecture & integration role you’ll work on (but not limited to);

Cutting edge research and development of novel solutions for zero emission powertrain elements and aircraft platform performance

Developing technology plans for elements of the hydrogen powertrain architecture including preparation of test strategy and verification

Simulation and analysis of complex systems that make up the powertrain – potentially including fluid dynamics, mechanical analysis and system behaviour modelling

System level safety & reliability analysis including use case and operational assessment

Deployment of Model Based Systems Engineering tools and understanding to a real programme

Integrating engineering activities of a fast-paced preliminary design team
