Our client is a long established and growing UK Engineering business with an international profile. They consistently make strong and sustained investment in people, capital and plant and are an acknowledged leader in their field.

Reporting to the Operations Director the role involves a wide variety of tasks requiring a broad understanding of health and safety and environmental regulations. The HSE Manager is responsible for supporting all site teams in the prevention of accidents and injuries in the workplace and for ensuring that all staff are provided with a safe and secure environment to work in. They will also lead the sites environmental strategy and champion initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the business alongside other environmental issues. A large proportion of the role will be active on site. You will be expected to be visible on the factory floor as much as possible and form strong relationships will all levels and groups on the site.

As the site HSE Manager, you must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. You will also be able to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety and environmental programs. The ability to communicate guidelines to a multidisciplinary & multi-cultural workforce is essential. The goal is to ensure the workplace meets all legal expectations, actively supports occupational health, welfare and safety and ensure no harm to people, place or environment. A sound knowledge of health and safety as well as environmental legislation and its application to the work environment. Experience of developing and providing health and safety training at all levels.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES - Health Safety And Environment

For this role, the HSE Manager must be able to work autonomously and manage complex Health & Safety duties as described below:
  • Promote a positive, proactive approach to health and safety.
  • Keeping site leads informed of statutory requirements and ensuring compliance from EHS regulations.
  • Providing an advisory service on all Health, Safety and Environment matters.
  • Maintaining and enforcing Health & Safety standards and good housekeeping onsite
  • Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses. Target improvements and compile reports for our insurers/solicitors and reporting notifiable incidents.
  • Maintain and manage health and safety polices, safety training and team briefings and document control systems.
  • Conduct safety inspections, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, safety inspections, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed, and employees are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Carrying out, maintaining amending and reviewing internal and external Audits and Risk assessments Safe systems of work (regulatory and process based) and all actions are tracked to completion.
  • Monitor compliance with the companies Health and Safety and Environmental Policies and procedures and formally advise managers on areas of non-compliance.
  • Arranging and undertaking regular inspections, audits, health surveillance, surveys and tests.
  • Responsible for contractors on site, that they adhere to H&S and have their risk assessments and insurances in order. Conduct Site inductions and Permit to work for contractors (e.g., height, hot works/ electrical).
  • Induction for all workers relevant to their area of work, keeping records of training and occupational health surveillance questionnaires and reviewing them on a regular basis, ensuring GDPR compliance.
  • Produce KPI’s -Monthly reporting of HSE stats monitoring the effectiveness of the HSE systems. e.g., accident statistics, leaks and spills, power usage, consumable usage, waste recycling.
  • Producing and monitoring systems and procedures for Visitors and Contractors ensuring same level of protection and control is afforded to them.
  • Responsibility for the control of pollution and emissions, internal and external, ensuring that these meet all legislative requirements at all times.
  • Responsible for DSE Assessments, accident book, first aid supplies, fire drills, risk assessments (both for work equipment and operations), COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, etc.
  • Responsible for ensuring the Company meets all statutory and environmental regulations, particularly in regard to dangerous substances and waste, i.e., COSHH, Waste Carriers Licence, F-Gas Certification, medicals for relevant staff, etc.
Qualifications

, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES - Health Safety and Environment
  • NEBOSH/IOSH certification or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years in a Health and Safety Officer/Manager role.
  • Ability to think strategically.
  • Experience of ISO 9001 / 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
  • Experience communicating with local authorities (HSE, etc).
  • Good understanding of the wider environmental impacts of the business.
  • A good knowledge of Health, Safety and Environment Legislation.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observational skills.
  • Previous experience of carrying out in-depth incident/accident investigations.

Hours: Mon-Thurs 8.00am - 5.00pm, Friday 8.00am - 12.30pm - Some flexibility is required
