Applicants are sought for position of a Glaucoma fellow based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The post is available to start February 2023, the post is for 12 months subject to satisfactory progress.

Candidates should be in possession of Outcome 6 at ARCP before commencing in post or be post CCST or equivalent and wish to specialise in Glaucoma. This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their core ophthalmology training, have undertaken some glaucoma training (clinics and glaucoma surgery) but seek specialist experience in Glaucoma management prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. Training in all aspects of Glaucoma is provided including,
  • Clinical management,
  • laser (SLT and YAG),
  • complex cataract surgeries,
  • traditional glaucoma surgeries (aqueous shunts, trabeculectomy) and
  • MIGS (KDB procedure, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, Xen implantation & soon the i-stent implant).
A clinical trials unit is active and research opportunities are available and encouraged.

Participation in the on-call rota is the norm at a frequency of 1:6. It is not an approved training post.

General

The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department. Office accommodation and secretarial support is available for this post.

Weekly Timetable

The timetable below is flexible and the candidate should expect that this will evolve with the needs of the service. You will be working alongside two Glaucoma Consultants. A formal job plan will be agreed with the appointee and their supervising Consultant (s) on behalf of the Clinical Director / Medical Director.

Facilities for Study and Training

Good library facilities are available at the John Radcliffe and at other libraries in central Oxford hospitals.

Teaching, Audit, Research, theatre

Active participation in audit, clinical trials and research is an essential requirement of NHS clinical governance unit and would be expected. Specialist glaucoma teaching occurs once a week. On a Friday morning, the fellow will have the opportunity to operate in either theatre to maximise learning opportunities in a supervised manner, with strong emphasis on complex glaucoma surgery. Training junior surgeons in phacoemulsification will be expected.

There is a formal on call commitment.
