Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Functional GI Fellow at Nottingham University Hospitals’ NHS Trust. This post offers the exciting opportunity to join a cohesive and progressive gastroenterology and hepatology department with a strong clinical and academic national profile. We are looking for a dynamic individual with an interest in Functional Bowel Disease. We are open to applicants at or nearing completion of training and also to those who are part way through their gastroenterology training and are keen to learn more in this fascinating and important area.

Nottingham University Hospital is invested to improve patient care, working collaboratively with partners in primary care and across the Integrated Care System. The primary aim of this post is to combine training in advanced functional gastroenterology with service delivery work whilst maintaining the delivery of high quality Gastroenterology clinical activity.

This post is offered initially for 12-months fixed term, but maybe extended dependent upon appraisal. It is suited to a Specialty trainee towards the end of their training and may be counted towards specialist training with deanery approval.

Please note previous experience working in the NHS is an essential requirement for this position.

Main duties of the job

Working predominantly with Dr Maura Corsetti and with input from other luminal gastroenterologists, the appointee will be allocated 4-5 clinical sessions per week in general and functional gastroenterology outpatients and in GI physiology. The remaining sessions will be used to develop service delivery pathways, to carry out research and if willing work towards a higher qualification or application for a competitive research fellowship. Depending upon the successful candidate’s aspirations and aptitude, there may be opportunity to extend the post beyond the first year to allow study towards a PhD at the University of Nottingham.

Clinical/Academic independence will be promoted and the fellow will be supported in carrying out research and will be encouraged to present this at national and international conferences and publish it in peer reviewed journals.

The successful applicant will be an integral member of our Gastroenterology transformational programme which facilitates the implementation of new pathways, supported by a full project team, senior leadership and commissioners. There is no General medicine, inpatient gastroenterology or on call component to this post.

It is expected that the post holder will work part-time towards a higher qualification during this fellowship in medical leadership although other qualifications would be supported. Course funding is included up to £5,500 per annum.
