Newport City Council’s City Services Department is seeking to appoint 2 Engineering Assistants to work on upcoming strategic highways and sustainable development projects. These posts are fixed term for an initial period of 2 years, with the possibility of extension subject to funding.

City Services is responsible for the Council’s front line services including, customer service channels (digital, contact centre and face to face) and environmental operations such as Engineering Design, Waste, Cleansing, Highways, Projects, Transport, Parks and Cemeteries.

The post holder will report directly to the Strategy and Policy Team Manager, delivering on a variety of exciting and challenging highway and sustainable development projects. These include the implementation of the upcoming pavement parking ban, default 20mph speed limits, and school streets schemes. The role is varied and offers an opportunity to deliver on new priorities for the Council, including the introduction of on-street electric vehicle charging.

The post holder will be responsible for implementing schemes by preparing plans for the preliminary design of these highways and sustainable transport initiatives, including traffic signs and carriageway marking design using bespoke CAD applications and assisting in the implementation of permanent Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO’s) and updating the Parkmap GIS database.

The successful candidate should have excellent administrative and problem solving skills, experience of using all Microsoft Office packages and digital design packages such as AutoCAD. A good eye for detail and effective time management skills are also required.

A flexible approach to work is essential due to the nature of the role and the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines is also required. A strong communicator is required for this role, as you will be liaising with Schools, Residents, Elected Members, alongside other Council departments. You will enjoy being part of a team but also able to work autonomously.
