About The Service

Cardiff Parenting Services are strategically led by a Senior Educational Psychologist and we are proud to have 5 more educational psychologists as part of that team. We are excited to be looking for one more full-time equivalent educational psychologist to join our growing team.

Parents Plus and Parents First are the psychology-led parenting services within Cardiff Flying Start. Both teams are led by Specialist Educational Psychologists and the successful candidate will support the Specialist Educational Psychologist/team managers with the input of psychology to the service and across Early Help, including Flying Start and the 0-18 age range. The teams are made up of dedicated parenting practitioners who carry out targeted and specialised work with parents that is supervised by the educational psychologist. The EPs provide induction and ongoing training for the practitioners, to ensure that our work with parents in informed by psychology.

We have office bases across Cardiff, although we are currently working from home due to COVID-19.

You can learn more about elements of Early Help by visiting the website www.cardifffamilies.co.uk.

Information about our Parenting Services can be found online:

We also post on our Twitter and Facebook pages – search for Cardiff Parenting – Rhianta Caerdydd to find out more.

After working with us, parents have said:
The conversations, support, and ideas has helped. I was worried about how to deal with situations and felt reassured when she explained how children’s brain works and its ok to feel angry. I never realised that how I used to react to the children’s behaviour was adding to the dramas. I now know children also need space and time to express their feelings. Things are better now. I feel the children respect me and my decisions as a parent.”

About the job

Some of our colleagues recently wrote about an aspect of our work for the British Psychological Society.
A golden opportunity at a precious time: a reflection on the role that Educational Psychologists play in supporting children 0-2 years old | BPS New tab (bps.org.uk)

The educational psychologist has a role as an applied psychologist, using psychology to inform work with parents, infants, children and young people across Cardiff; supervision of parenting practitioners (Home Liaison Officers), and training for the team and wider Early Help service.

Within the parenting service, the educational psychologist makes an initial assessment of the child’s progress, family circumstances and family structure within the context of the home and family life. Personalised targets are co-constructed in casework formulation and the Home Liaison Officer carries out a targeted and time-limited intervention, supervised by the EP. The process is underpinned by attachment theory and incorporates well established intervention processes. Parents are encouraged to gain insight and make changes through the use of counselling skills and collaboration.

The main role of the EP will be:
  • To train staff, supervise, monitor and evaluate the time-limited and targeted interventions by the Home Liaison Officers of Cardiff Parenting team based on evidence-based psychological strategies and theories
  • To promote an educational and psychological approach within Early Help services
  • To contribute to ensuring high quality provision across Flying Start Early Years settings
  • To contribute to improving outcomes for children by promoting their growth, well being and emotional health
  • To promote the confidence, efforts and capacity of the parents we work with to successfully parent their children
  • To undertake relevant psychological research and dissemination

You will be supported with ongoing professional development opportunities. You will be provided with a telephone, personal computer and the resources and support required to feel confident and safe in your role.

Our staff retention is high and our colleagues say:
“As a psychologist, contributing to a change process over time is hugely satisfying. Being able to spend time having in depth discussions using a problem solving framework, planning interventions followed by ongoing review and hypothesis testing, allows time to think about and apply psychology.

“Having worked as a school EP for a number of years, moving to work in a different context was a risk, however the organisational ethos and support is extremely positive. The CPD opportunities are excellent and time is given for growth and development.”

“Working in this lovely supportive team gives me the opportunity as an EP to apply psychology, at all different levels, on a daily basis, and make a difference to children and families”.
