The Challenge

In this role you will be forward deployed to the Finance, Military and Capability (Infrastructure) team.

Infrastructure is a critical enabler of Defence Capability and outputs. With approximately 1.4% of the UK landmass managed or used by MOD, managing an Infrastructure Enterprise comprising airfields, barracks, naval bases, nuclear facilities, training areas, test ranges and housing is a complex business which accounts for approximately 10% of the Defence budget.

Our Infrastructure directorate sits at the heart of Defence in Finance and Military Capability (FMC) which is at the centre of all the MOD’s major capability and financial decisions. It is jointly headed by the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Military Capability) (DCDS MilCap) and the Director General Finance (DG Fin). It is responsible for taking a pan-Departmental view of MOD’s strategic direction and balance of investment decisions. We ensure that infrastructure requirements support a coherent, balanced and affordable Defence Plan in accordance with strategic direction and that the Infrastructure Function operates coherently across Defence.

Working within the FMC Defence Estates Optimisation (DEO) Portfolio, this post holder is a key leader in driving and delivering strategy and plans for the portfolio, ensuring continuous improvements, innovative ways of working and coherence and compliance with wider Government and Defence initiatives!

A fast-paced, friendly, diverse and inclusive directorate, we are passionate about what we do. We work flexibly, and we are looking for a sharp, self-motivated, industrious and experienced professional. You will have the ability to think strategically and to assimilate, assess, link and brief varied and diverse issues; preparing and directing work in order to directly support the DEO Director.

The role is responsible for developing and delivering proactive communications for DEO, including sourcing and producing progress news as part of a managed communications plan. Working as part of a small team to improve the understanding and delivery of DEO, the Business and Strategic Comms post will work closely with the project teams to track and identify delivery milestones of note; handle the messaging and content of externally produced comms with contracted partners; and support the portfolio and wider DEO team with external comms and engagement including commercial and contracting events.

The role is also responsible for the production of communications material; clear and succinct papers, up to and including ministerial submissions; and the line management and development of a business manager (graphics and content) assistant.

We employ approximately 4,900 staff from a very diverse range of professions, and we work across the world; in Germany, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands, Norway, Poland, Kenya, Belize, Nepal and Oman.
