The Challenge

The Data and Analytics teams form the foundations of DEx. The Data team is looking to institutionalise data governance, establishing trust in the data and a uniform version of the truth. These roles look to develop and mature data ownership across all parts of the business providing support and direction. This includes supporting and playing an active role in the MOD’s wider Master Data Management goals.

The Business Intelligence (BI) function within DEx is focused on defining, developing, exploiting and supporting the capabilities to enable the wider DIO to generate significant business benefit in using data for reporting, management information and analytics. It achieves this through the scoping of user requirements, rapid release management using agile techniques and sits within the analytics functions.

The BI function is a critical component in enabling DEx to provide expertise and insight to the wider DIO as well as delivering self-service abilities to the other directorates.

The Analytics team within DIO provides a service to the delivery and support functions of the DIO to specify, design, build, test and deploy models and a range of analytical outputs based on statistics and geospatial analysis. Working closely with the business users across DIO, the Analytics team adds insight through the application of tools and techniques to help to either shape the business challenge into a more coherent form or to provide intelligence that is able to drive outcomes that determine the solution to complex problems. This supports the business in decision making, business cases and the management of the DIO.

The Analytics team is responsible for the exploitation of the data blending this with technical knowledge and expertise to utilise the range of tools at their disposal in a way that the business would not be able to achieve without this activity.
