Are you an experienced operational manager looking for the opportunity to progress to the next level of leadership? The current postholder has successfully secured a secondment into a different role within the Division, creating an opportunity within the Surgery Division at Nottingham University Hospitals for a highly skilled individual with drive and determination to join our dynamic management team as Deputy Directorate General Manager. The Division consists of 21 Specialties including Neurosurgery, Major Trauma, Orthopaedics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT and Gastroenterology. The Division has an annual turnover of £330m income and employs over 2,500 staff.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Directorate General Manager will have operational and strategic responsibilities within the Division under the direction of the Deputy Divisional General Manager, with a focus on driving improvement related to financial and efficiency performance as well as quality and safety. To support you in this task you’ll be working closely with the team of Specialty General Managers who will be working hands on in the specialties. This role will provide leadership for the Divisional analytics team and the Digital agenda.

In addition, the role will be operationally aligned to the Digestive Diseases Directorate, which is one of the three Directorates within the Division delivering elective, emergency and diagnostic activity on both QMC and City Hospital sites

The role will give the postholder exposure to all of the specialties within the Surgical Division, maintaining operational responsibility for key functions, but at the same time providing a dedicated resource to focus on key improvement initiatives which align with the Divisions strategic priorities.

You will be joining the Division at an exciting time, with new theatres for Digestive Diseases specialties due to open late in the summer and further reconfiguration plans under development

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

    • Educated to first degree level
    • Further training to masters level or equivalent experience
    • Previous successful management experience at a senior level within the NHS

Desirable criteria

    • Evidence of other specialist management training to post graduate level

Experience

Essential criteria

    • Highly developed leadership and organisational skills
    • Highly developed specialist knowledge of NHS policy, health sector practices and functions of NHS provider organisations and current targets in place
    • Proven track record of senior operational management in a multi-disciplinary environment
    • Extensive experience of influencing decision making within a large and complex organisation

Communication and Relationship

Essential criteria

    • Demonstrates ability to communicate highly complex, sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
    • Ability to communicate with both internal staff and external agencies to ensure compliance with performance targets.
    • Highly developed leader with strong interpersonal and communication skills

    • Demonstrates ability to analyse complex facts or situations in relation to performance targets, strategy, finance

    • Proven track record of developing successful business plans and strategy for planning activity
    • Experience of managing complex organisational change including working with clinical & non clinical staff to change team structures and ways of working
    • Confident in presenting complex information to wide and varied audience both internal and external to the organisation
    • Experience of formulating long term strategic plans and impact on the organisation – translating business strategy into operational delivery
