This role is responsible for managing the delivery of projects at the cutting edge of technological and scientific developments commensurate with the skills, experience and qualifications required for the post. The individual must be able to demonstrate a successful track record and significant experience of managing and delivering projects.

Supporting all areas of Defence, the programmes and projects that DD are responsible for range from short term, fast paced and complex operational communications services through to large scale endeavours that can take many years to complete.

Working with industry partners and sometimes international counterparts, DD Programme and Project management professionals could undertake some of the most challenging activities in the procurement and support of military capability.

The individual in this role will be required to support differing projects depending on the business needs. Due to the nature of the business, all roles may be subject to additional tasking from time to time as required by function and line management in support of our ‘agile resourcing’ approach.

(Posts will have staff management responsibility. Dependent on the ‘tasking’ and business need, there may be a requirement to travel to meetings within the UK and for occasional overseas visits).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:

Delivery – Create and lead the project to deliver the agreed outcomes within time, cost and quality constraints.

Project Management – Day to day management and leadership of the project and the project team. Set project controls. Design the project structure appropriate to stage. Select and apply appropriate delivery methodologies.

Business Case – Coordinate development of the Business Case.

Budget – Track delivery within budget.

Resources – Schedule / manage resources to deliver the project. May work independently or with a small team.

Benefits Realisation – Ensure benefits are identified, understood, measured, tracked and owned. Ensure appropriate Benefits Realisation Strategy is in place, and monitor longer term delivery of benefits against the Business Case.

Stakeholder Management – Identify key stakeholders and develop effective relationships.

Risks & Issues – Identify and monitor project risks and issues. Develop mitigating actions and escalate as appropriate.

Governance – Provide key reports and support effective governance and decision making.

Assurance – Support or set appropriate project assurance.

Change Management – Ensure effective Change Management processes are in place to agree and document changes to deliverables as agreed with stakeholders.

Guidance & Support – Seek appropriate support, guidance and coaching from the project community. Show commitment to personal development. Promote effective individual and team performance.

Project Performance & Controls – Build Project Plan and apply appropriate project principles to deliver stated objectives. Identify and set appropriate Project Controls. Track and report delivery against milestones.

Develop An Effective Working Knowledge Of

APM Body of Knowledge, Knowledge in Defence (KiD), Joint Service Publication (JSP) 655: Defence Investment Approvals, Cabinet Office and Treasury Approvals. Experience and Knowledge of Project On-Line, Active Risk Management, Defence Risk Tool.

Essential Criteria
  • Experience of leading projects and successfully delivering outcomes.
  • Experience of supplier management including use of different procurement strategies.
  • Good practice of robust project controls including risk, schedule and cost control.
  • Good scope management and change control skills.
  • Experience of requirements management and customer engagement.
