Post Title:Crop Technician Apprentice: 24 months
Salary: £5.30 per hour (£212 a week); 40 hours per week: Monday to Friday with some weekend working
Purpose of the job: To support the optimisation of crop/plant yields though effective maintenance and management of protected growing environments

Are you interested in starting a career in commercial production horticulture? If so, we have a very exciting opportunity to work within our state-of-the-art Horticulture Production Unit whilst completing a Level 3 Crop Technician Apprenticeship.
You will be working within our new Vertical Farming Facility – 200 sq,m of growing space with a fully automated irrigation system and LED lighting; as well as our existing high-tech commercial glasshouse. You will be involved in the production of a wide variety of fresh produce and ornamental crops and will have the opportunity to contribute to research and trials work within the facility.

Your duties will include:

  • Undertaking routine tasks associated with the propagation and establishment and harvesting of protected crops
  • Undertaking routine tasks associated with the management of plant stock and crops within production areas as directed including plant nutrition applications, irrigation and crop husbandry
  • Monitoring and controlling pests, weeds and diseases including safe use, application and storage of chemicals and maintains accurate and appropriate records
  • Carrying out crop observations and collects data, as directed, and maintains accurate and appropriate records
  • Maintaining high levels of hygiene and biosecurity following best practice management protocols at all times
  • Working closely with appropriate staff to ensure that the agreed cropping, propagation and maintenance programmes are carried out efficiently, effectively and safely, and that the agreed educational and commercial requirements are met
  • Communicating with colleagues, students and members of the public

You will attend lessons and training sessions as part of your Apprenticeship, typically one day per week, and will be expected to participate fully on all off-the-job activities to ensure successful completion of your Apprenticeship. You will be supported in this by your employer mentor, tutors, and Skills Coach who will direct and assist you to help you to succeed.
Although you don’t need to have any prior experience of working within a horticulture setting, we are particularly keen to hear from individuals who have a passion for horticulture and who would like to develop their career in this sector.

Please note this role constitutes ‘regulated activity’ as defined by the Protection of Freedom Act 2012. The successful candidate will therefore be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check with barred list information prior to starting employment. You must have the right to work in the UK and will be required to provide evidence to support this.
