Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Rehabilitation medicine at Nottingham University NHS Trust. We are looking to appoint a substantive consultant to lead the development of rehabilitation services across NUH sites.

This is a very exciting time to become involved in rehabilitation medicine in the East Midlands. Planning for the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) is in its advanced stages, and there is a wonderful opportunity for a new consultant to join our team to support, shape and drive service improvements. Our rehabilitation strategy includes our ambitions to deliver on the NRC project, whilst also sustaining and developing rehabilitation medicine services delivered on the NUH site. We have approval in principle for a hyperacute rehabilitation unit, with the aim being to deliver early, goal-directed rehabilitation to patients transitioning from our Major Trauma Centre. We also have plans to develop intensive rehabilitation pathways for medical and surgical patients stepping down from long Critical Care stays. We need forward-thinking consultants who can move forwards with these plans, and shape the future of rehabilitation medicine in Nottingham, the surrounding area and nationwide. This represents a unique opportunity for a new team of consultants to take rehabilitation medicine at NUH in a new and exciting direction.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for a share of the inpatients treated at Linden Lodge: shared with the current incumbent this would amount to an average of 7-9 inpatients per consultant. Outpatient clinics include neuro rehab, spasticity and amputation depending on experience and interest. There are no on-call duties and the candidate is not expected to work at weekends or after working hours.

We want ambitious and dedicated professionals to join us on this journey. The NRC programme is more than 18 months into a 3 year programme to redesign services, widen access for non Neuro patients and, in conjunction with HEE, develop a core skills set around rehabilitation. We are already putting in to place systems to support allied health professionals (AHPs) in advanced practice roles designed to complement existing rehabilitation services, and the successful candidate will be expected to help guide and shape this important development which, in time, will become an important aspect of the operation of the NRC.

More locally at NUH immediately there is a drive to create a wider rehabilitation service for our patient population. We are a tertiary centre for Major Trauma and Neurosurgery, and an increasing array of patients with complex neurodisability and/or musculoskeletal disability require rehabilitation medicine input throughout their care journey.

Working for our organisation

With over 17,000 staff, we are one of the biggest employers in the city with a central role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our local population. We play a leading role in research, education and innovation.

Come and join our wonderful team at NUH. We are big believers in diversity and welcome new ideas to help develop our team in order to deliver world class healthcare to the vast patient populations we serve. With endless personal development opportunities available, at NUH we will endeavour to turn your job into a career!

We particularly welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, as we are striving to be better represented at NUH.
