Job overview

Clinical Psychologist for people with Non-Epileptic Attack Disorder / Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (1.0 wte, Permanent), Part-time / Job-share welcome

The Neurology service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is a specialist clinical environment which provides differential diagnosis of seizures and management of epilepsy.

This post is a unique and exciting opportunity for a Clinical Psychologist to help deliver an innovative multidisciplinary service for people with non-epileptic attack disorder (NEAD). The postholder will collaborate with the existing MDT including four consultant neurologists with seizure expertise, specialist nurses and the consultant clinical psychologist/neuropsychologist.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will contribute to delivery of the Psychology component of the service including liaising with referrers to identify appropriate patients, managing referrals, identifying appropriate therapeutic bases, delivering tailored therapy and evaluating outcomes.

NEAD is a varied condition in terms of presentation, history, comorbidities and contributing mechanisms. In this service the activity is largely outpatient-based. There is an emphasis on bio-psycho-social principles of care/ treatment/ rehabilitation and taking a pragmatic approach to improving functioning where possible. There will be a priority on group-based programmes and there will be limited targeted individual contact. Experience of NEAD, other functional neurological conditions, and other somatic symptom disorders is essential, as is experience of recognising the multi-factorial nature of health conditions potentially including social, interpersonal, psychological, neuropsychological, developmental, and adverse-event factors.

There is a range of outcomes for people with NEAD, with a significant minority gaining no or little benefit from treatment. The successful postholder will be supported in balancing the potential individual benefits from the service with managing the caseload to ensure an ongoing provision of service to new patients.

Working for our organisation

The postholder will be based in the Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology Service at NUH, from which clinical and administrative support is available. There are opportunities to discuss cases with the Neurologists including attendance at the weekly Seizure MDT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post has been developed in the context of the neuroscience unit of a large, regional acute hospital. Routine practice involves the development and delivery of innovative and highly specialist programmes of care. At the same time, the successful candidate will have to resourcefully manage more rudimentary challenges that can arise in such environments including negotiating travel arrangements to and from the workplace, securing an appropriate clinical base in which sessions take place, and liaising with disparate services and specialisms, administratively and clinically.

Candidates must be registered with the HCPC as a Clinical Psychologist

Please see attached job description and person specification.

Interview date TBC. As part of the interview candidates may be asked to prepare a brief presentation outlining their plan and vision of the programme (to be confirmed).
