About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Beamline Scientist to join our B07 team to carry out in-house research, provide operational support for the beamline, including responsibility for the day-to-day safe operation of the beamline, and interact closely with the users of the facility.

Responsibilities include:

  • Acting as a single point of contact (Local Contact) for a proportion of user experiments providing specialist technical/scientific advice.
  • Collaborating on beamline upgrades and development projects, including taking specific responsibility for certain components of the beamline such as the design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning phases.
  • Managing the day-to-day coordination of support groups at Diamond to implement beamline upgrade projects, to improve the quality of the beamline, develop solutions for emerging problems, and ensure its smooth operation.
  • Developing your own research in an area relevant to the beamline and disseminate the results.
  • Procurement of beamline components, including writing system specifications, the management of contracts and liaison with suppliers.
  • Managing the development, procurement, testing, installation, and maintenance of bespoke scientific equipment and software to perform novel experiments on the beamline and the peripheral laboratory.
  • Advising on the development of data acquisition, visualization and analysis software and be involved in commissioning of new software.

About You

You will have an appropriate Science Degree or equivalent and an appropriate PhD and proven relevant experience in a field related to X-ray spectroscopy, catalysis, or surface science.

You will have experience in managing medium or long-term projects (scientific, instrument design/upgrade etc.)

You will have experience in the use of synchrotron radiation specific scientific instrumentation with a good background knowledge in beamline instrumentation and electron and X-ray detectors.

You will have the ability to work flexibly with regular weekend and out-of hours working and must be available to travel occasionally within the UK and abroad, including overnight absences.
