About the job

Job summary

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as the behavioural scientist in the Personnel Directorate, Army HQ. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due to the innovation initiative being funded for 2 years. The business will then assess whether this should be an enduring capability. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and end 23 months after that date. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.

If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 23 months). At the end of the posting, you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties, then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.

If you are transferring to MoD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan. At the end of the loan, you will return to your home (OGD) department. If a loan cannot be agreed between all parties, then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA policy for further information.

People are the British Army’s greatest asset, with a workforce of 82,000 Regular personnel, 30,000 Reserve personnel and around 7,500 civilians. Our soldiers have to make life-critical decisions and take purposeful action in sometimes hostile, confusing and unclear situations that occasionally test them to the limit of human endurance. We are embarking on a 2-3 year initiative to ensure the way we physically and psychologically develop and prepare them is based on cutting edge performance and behavioural science, underpinned by data analytics. This initiative is targeted at improving soldiers’ performance today, and will also shape Future Soldier - the British Army’s most radical transformation in 20 years.

These posts will be located in the Army Personnel Directorate, and are offered as fixed term appointments (FTAs) for an initial period of 23 months, but with the possibility to extend for a further 12 months subject to business requirement and funding.

Behavioural science is making a real-world difference in tackling some of the biggest issues Defence faces, including the adoption of new technologies, sustainable working practices and changing people’s behaviour following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Army’s demand for behavioural science is increasing, and will be a fundamental part of our soldier performance initiative. There is now an exciting opportunity to further develop your career in a high profile and impactful new initiative within the human sciences. This role provides the opportunity for the right candidate to have a real impact on the performance of soldiers as an ‘on the ground’ behavioural scientist; you will use your expertise to help achieve the behavioural changes needed to lead to maximised soldier performance. You will be suitably qualified and work as part of a multidisciplinary team where collaboration will be key, but you should also be comfortable working autonomously with the ability to showcase your technical ability and expertise. Please note that as part of this role, you must be willing to undergo SC security clearance and a standard or enhanced DBS check.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided with reasonable adjustments to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us if you require any reasonable adjustments.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
