Job summary
The Defence School of Transport (DST), was formed in 1996 to provide driver and transport management training to personnel from the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines.
The school trains 10,000 service personnel every year, delivering outstanding training on road-going and specialist military vehicles. Training is conducted in classrooms, lecture theatres, demonstration areas, a purpose-built road and cross-country training area and on public roads.
DST can train up to 1,500 personnel at any time making us the largest residential driving school in the World. We are recognised as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by: DHL, Eddie Stobart, the US Army, the US Marine Corps and the French Army amongst others. To meet this vast training task our dedicated establishment of 700 military and civilian personnel operates a fleet of 600 vehicles ranging from saloon cars to Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) professional to specialist military trucks and lease-hire LGV. We are looking to recruit a cohort of Driving Examiners to deliver
- Practical examination of Driver Training
- Theory instruction
As a Defence Driving Examiner (DDE) you will be required to conduct driving tests to the standards of the Driving Standards Authority DVSA for both Vocational and Non-Vocational licences. You will be responsible for ensuring the validity of all official documentation presented for driving tests and accurately complete all relevant and accountable documents used in connection with driving tests.
You will also be required to deliver classroom-based Driver Theory training to service personnel and will be responsible for the quality of training to enable students to meet the licence theory test standards, vocational and non-vocational, as set down by the DVSA;
Invigilate theory tests to DVSA standards.
There may be the opportunity to work overtime should you wish to volunteer.

It is essential that:
- Applicants hold a current C+E licence (with no restrictions).
- Applicants have held a Category C driving licence for a minimum of 5 years with no more than 3 current penalty points.
- Applicants be free from any driving disqualifications for the previous 4 years (from the termination point of the disqualification).
- Applicants need to have effective oral and written communication skills.
The role requires job holders to use MS Office and some specific IT applications so applicants must be computer literate.
Previous instructional or driving examination experience is desirable; however, we will give you on-the-job training.
All DST Defence Driving Examiners are required to attend and pass the following residential courses within 6 months of taking up the post:
- DDE qualification course at DST, Leconfield. Duration - 3 weeks.
- Defence Trainer Qualification within 6 months of starting at Leconfield. (Weeks 1-2 – Defence Trainer Qualification, Week 3 – completion of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training Portfolio).
Training will be provided to support you in gaining the above qualifications.
Licences
Category C licence held for a minimum of 5 years with no more than 3 current penalty points and must be free from any driving disqualifications for the previous 4 years (from the termination point of the disqualification).
Holding a full C+E licence is an essential requirement (with no restrictions).
