JOB TITLE: Aero Projects Engineer
SALARY: £34,000 - £41,000
POSTING END DATE: 25/07/2021
LOCATION: Gaydon

We’re re-examining our vehicles and what a vehicle means in the emerging world of automation, connectedness, electrification and the shared economy. New ideas, new technology, and new approaches to mobility are our business. Join a team of next generation thinkers.

WHAT TO EXPECT

TASE is an Attribute group within Vehicle Engineering. It is responsible for the delivery of Thermal, Aerodynamic, Aeroacoustic and Water & Dirt Mangement (W&DM) requirements for all JLR vehicle programmes; as well as the development of associated tool-sets. The Aerodynamics attribute requirements include: delivery of targets for aerodynamic drag, lift and lateral aerodynamic loads.

The team also provides body panel and component loading analysis. This is done through development of upper body design, underbody smoothing and the application of drag reduction technologies. The W&DM attribute delivers vision, visibility and system functionality through external water management and soiling reduction. Development tools used within the TASE function include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD: PowerFLOW, Star CCM+ and UH3D), Thermal Modelling (Radtherm), moving-ground aerodynamic and aeroacoustic wind tunnel testing at The Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart, Germany (FKFS), along with W&DM testing at both FKFS and Horiba-MIRA (UK). The Thermal Attribute delivers heat management, cooling performance and thermal protection using both CAE and physical testing (CWT and HET) both in the UK and on overseas tests.

Aerodynamics plays an important role in the business through its contributions towards competitive energy efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. Tighter legislative controls and the introduction of WLTP require the business to be technically innovative in aerodynamics. Customer expectations of our products also require that we minimise soiling and manage surface water flows.

The Aerodynamics engineer will work within the TASE group, reporting directly to the Aero Technical Team Group Leader. This role is within the Aerodynamics/W&DM Technical Team to provide physical test support – including test planning, the preparation of vehicles for test and the surrounding logistical arrangements, as well as supporting the execution of the testing itself and post-processing / analysis of results. The role entails working closely with Technical Specialists, TASE Engineers, and other areas of the business such as workshops as well as external test facilities to ensure that every test is successfully accomplished. This varied role requires a methodical and organised approach to undertaking technical work, coupled to a flexible customer-first mind-set to respond to issues as they arise.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities to include:

  • Quality and timeliness of aerodynamics/WDM testing
  • Support development of individual test plans to support vehicle programme timing
  • Lead the overall planning of physical tests and delivery of associated vehicles, parts and test properties required
  • Support other TASE Engineers in the execution of physical tests developing the aerodynamic/W&DM performance of vehicles to meet targets
  • Work with Technical Specialists and Attribute Leaders to define Forward Strategies, including new test methods
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Excellent organisation and planning skills are required for this role.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrate the ability to carry out tasks un-supervised once defined.
