An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioner to take up the role working in the acute setting within General Paediatrics.

The General Paediatric Service consists of a team of 21 General Paediatricians working closely together with the nursing team of which the APNP is an integral part. The role of the APNP would predominantly be based on the Children’s Observation and Assessment Unit but would also be required to support the 54 bedded Children’s Inpatient Unit inclusive of 4 high dependency beds.

The post holder will work on the medical rota and be primarily responsible for the acute assessment and diagnosis of children and young people producing management and treatment plans for ongoing care to provide a safe and quality service. They will be responsible for timely reviews They will also have the opportunity to support the Paediatric Strategy, alongside the Assistant Director of Nursing. In association with the Clinical Director and Directorate Manager for the service to enhance specialist nurse led services, improve pathways and develop an enhanced multi-disciplinary approach. This includes looking at new ways of working and models of care.

The successful candidate will be expected to work across a 7 day service working closely with the paediatric medical team and nursing teams to deliver care that is Safe, Personal and Effective.

Act as role model displaying exemplary professionalism and enhance standards within the department.

As an autonomous practitioner, carry out and demonstrate advanced clinical assessment and treatment of a diverse and undetermined caseload of children requiring unscheduled care, who may have highly complex acute presentation from the very sick, seriously ill or injured child to the more minor common childhood illnesses and accidents

Determine clinical diagnosis and treatment, and oversee ongoing management, referring onwards as determined by clinical need.

Provide clinical expertise and work collaboratively to develop and enhance children’s services

Monitor and improve standards of care through the use of evidence based practice, supervision, teaching and supporting colleagues, and the provision of compassionate leadership.

Participate in the updating of department protocols and guidelines.

Act as a multidisciplinary educational resource for medical and nursing members of the team and associated professionals, by designing and delivering educational sessions, simulation and ‘bedside’ style teaching.

To develop and participate in audit and research projects.

To lead on the introduction of new management pathways, integrating practice.

Champion evidence-based practice.

To undergo IRMER training to allow the ordering of radiological investigations

To understand childhood safeguarding ensuring compliance with policies and procedures
