Please note: Priority will be given to at risk applicants from local authority employers.

The Council Tax & Business Rates teams play a vital role, along with colleagues in Sundry Income, in collecting revenue income for the authority to help it pay for the services it provides. The Council Tax and Business Rates teams are responsible for assessing, charging, billing and recovering Council Tax and Business Rates, as well as Business Improvement District levies from over 100,000 Council Tax and Ratepayers.

Inspections of both empty and occupied premises are an important part of this process, as these identify new properties and changes to properties that need to be reviewed, as well as enabling us to maintain accurate records and to make sure customers are correctly charged following changes in occupation.

As an inspector, you will be required to undertake internal and external inspections of all types of property liable for Council Tax and / or Business Rates purposes, to ensure both the maximisation of the Council’s income, as well as to ensure that steps are taken to notify the Valuation Office Agency of the completion of all newly built and structurally altered buildings. As part of this task, you will be required to serve completion notices where appropriate.

The ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills, be able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy, and be able to organise their own workload with minimum supervision.

Good analytical skills are also required to interpret information in order to resolve problems or to enable judgements to be made.
