How you’ll make a difference

You will be part of a specialist school support team working with schools, settings and families to develop practice and provision for Gypsy Roma and Irish Traveller pupils (GRT) pupils and communities at strategic and operational levels. The focus is on supporting the attainment, progress and attendance of GRT pupils.


What you will be doing
  • You will be working with families, education settings and childminders to support access to early years provision.
  • You may support families to complete online/hard copy applications related to education welfare for example, access, admissions, transfers and school transport.
  • You will develop close links between Traveller families and schools, developing relationships and understanding between school staff and parents.
  • You will provide advice and guidance to parents, pupils and professionals on issues related to ensuring access and continuity of education for Traveller children, including transition into Reception year, infant to junior, Year 6 to Year 7 and Year 11 into post-16.
  • Consulting with and supporting School staff, Attendance Exclusion & Licensing Team/ Education Welfare Officers in the promotion of positive uptake of education and school attendance of Traveller children, organising site visits and supporting introductions between these officers/staff and Traveller families.
  • You will establish effective working relationships with other departments and services such as Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators and other educational/healthcare professionals to support families, school staff and officers to complete statutory assessments.
  • You will work with school staff to explore the needs of GRT pupils and support the development of a suitable programme of work.
  • You may offer time limited project work to schools to support the inclusion of Traveller pupils e.g social skills group work; wellbeing support / mentoring.
  • You will support schools to plan and deliver schemes of work celebrating GRT History month and other activities/events which provide a positive view of diversity within the school and local community, helping to combat stereotypical views of GRT, reducing intolerance and racism.
  • You may undertake visits to authorised and unauthorised sites of the Traveller community, promoting the positive uptake of education by their children and addressing education welfare needs.
  • You will deliver training and awareness raising about Traveller lifestyle and culture to Schools and other institutions/services.

What we need from you

  • A professional qualification in Teaching, Social Work, Youth Work, Education Welfare Studies or an equivalent qualification with significant post qualification experience are essential.
  • It would be advantageous to have experience of working in schools in collaboration with teaching staff, working with black and minority ethnic communities and possess an understanding of issues surrounding race equalities and inclusion.
  • You will have knowledge of current education statutory requirements and legislation.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of professionals, including school staff and parents and facilitate communication between schools and parents is essential.
  • You will have extensive knowledge and experience of Child Protection policy and procedures.
  • You will build good relationships to effectively communicate issues relating to unfamiliar cultures to Traveller families and schools; to achieve a mutual understanding.
  • You will have the ability to influence service providers and achieve attitude shifts.
  • You will be required to explain complex structures in a manner to suit different audiences.
  • You may have evidence of continuing professional development.
