How you’ll make a difference

Working in our highway maintenance team who deliver key highway maintenance works across the whole highway network in South Gloucestershire area, you will provide a one stop shop for managing the many small jobs that need to be completed in order to meet the needs of our residents and keeping our places safe.

Based from our operating depot in Yate near Bristol, as a Lead Skilled Roadworker you will be responsible for delivery of the effective day to day organisation and control of a gang or gangs of road workers undertaking civil engineering, structures and highway maintenance works. In the role you will ensure that a good standard of workmanship is achieved by all employees in your team including sub-contractors and also ensure that performance levels are met.

What will you be doing:

  • You will take the lead and ensure that safe methods of work are always employed to include safe operation of plant and equipment, and that all staff are using the required PPE and is stored appropriately
  • It will be your responsibility to undertake highly skilled manual construction work, including specialist practices such as setting out and marking up works from site maps and plans, measuring job sites and quantifying materials for works
  • You will assisting during working hours in maintaining basic traffic management and for urgent situations making the highway safe for users, clearing debris from road traffic collisions and using appropriate signing, lighting and guarding to protect the public.
  • Duties will include organising, preparing and carrying out pothole and patch repairs on live carriageway and setting forms and laying precast concrete or natural stone kerbs
  • You will carry out repairs to drainage, ducts and fix new street furniture, the relaying of flags stones, blocks and cobbles and repairs and replacement of road signs, post and street name signs and replace damaged ironwork in the highway
  • In the role you will operate small mechanical plant used in the maintenance of highways
  • You may be required to be available to be on-call at evenings and at weekends, on a rota basis, as mutually agreed with the StreetCare Operations Manager.

What we need from you

  • It is essential that you have an in-depth knowledge and the practical skills gained through experience, to undertake highway or construction maintenance to include working with bituminous materials and the preparation of potholes and patches and substantial experience in setting out and delivering works to a high standard.
  • You will be Accredited to the Street Works Qualification Register (Certificates LA & 01 to 08)
  • It is essential that you hold a minimum category B licence for manual transmission vehicles with experience in driving vehicles up to 3500kg and have recognised training in the use of small tools and light plant used in the industry.
  • You must feel confident to have the responsibility for directing other team members and be able to use mobile IT equipment such as tablets to receive and record works progress.
  • It is key that you are both reliable and flexible in your approach to work able to respond positively to changes in work priorities and work well in a team but also be adaptable to changes in team dynamics to accommodate operational needs.
  • You will be able to work outdoors in all environments and weather conditions including severe winter weather.
  • It is essential that you have a full UK driving licence with experience of driving laden long wheel-based (transit style) tipper along with recent relevant experience in a similar commercial or public sector highways construction or maintenance role.
