Job content

Our volunteers help people with disabilities, by making them individually-adapted equipment to suit their needs. The equipment may make the normal activities of daily life possible or less difficult or painful, or help people enjoy leisure activities. Requests for our help are increasing, and we need more volunteers to meet it, anywhere in Lincolnshire but especially around Grantham and Boston. We are practical people who like designing and making things, and get added pleasure from knowing our work is useful to others. If you are moderately competent at DIY you can certainly help. Much of what we make is as simple as raising a chair to enable someone to stand up without a struggle, or fitting a camera support to the wheelchair of a disabled photographer. There are also more complex jobs for those with the skills to make powered equipment suitable for those with very little physical strength. Lindap volunteers do much of the work at home, yet are very much part of a team whose members help each other. New members have a mentor who will support them while they gain confidence in helping our clients. You do not need a workshop, but should have a reasonable range of tools and enough space to work in. You should be happy to operate independently, deciding how a problem is best solved by something you can make - although other members with different skills and equipment will assist. You do not need any knowledge of disabilities.Expenses for material and travel are refunded. Own transport is needed unless you live somewhere with good transport links. You should be over 18. Volunteers will receive mentoring and support.
