IOSH is the Chartered body and world’s largest membership organisation for health and safety professionals. We are currently looking for new members for our influential Nominations Committee, particularly people with HR experience. .

What will you be doing?

Acting as an advisory committee to the IOSH Council, our Nominations Committee is tasked with ensuring key volunteer positions across the IOSH governance structure are filled with the most suitable candidates, selected through open, fair and consistent processes. IOSH promotes an inclusive environment where we celebrate and value diversity.

The Nominations Committee is made up of IOSH members and non-members. We would welcome applications from individuals from outside IOSH membership who particularly have knowledge and experience of human resources and recruitment/selection processes. Successful candidates will sit on the committee alongside other non-members and IOSH members, all of whom will bring a range of skills and experience from within and outside the world of health and safety.

The time commitment is up to 9 days per year to
  • attend up to three committee meetings
  • spend time between meetings reading and reviewing papers
  • review applications for IOSH Board and Committee positions
  • take part in short listing conference calls
  • sit on interview panels of up to two days’ duration and assess candidates’ suitability for a role
This committee requires a degree of flexibility as dates are set dependent on individuals’ availability at the time.

Our committee members are appointed for two or three years initially with the opportunity to be re-appointed up to a maximum term of six years.

These are voluntary positions and reasonable expenses will be paid when attending face to face meetings, although currently all the Nominations Committee work is carried out on Zoom.

Being an IOSH volunteer can be a highly rewarding experience. It can bring development opportunities and enhance your transferable skills, while expanding your network and sphere of influence.

All IOSH volunteers are required to sign a Volunteer Agreement. This agreement has been signed by IOSH too, demonstrating our commitment to our volunteers. We ask the same in return.

The Code of Behaviour, which is referred to in the Volunteer Agreement, is ultimately the foundation of the agreement. This Code of Behaviour clearly defines what is expected of IOSH volunteers, provides guidance on upholding IOSH’s values and outlines what you can expect from IOSH. If appointed to the Nominations Committee you will be asked to sign this agreement before being able to undertake your role.

What are we looking for?

For this independent (non-IOSH member) role we are looking for someone with experience of recruitment and selection in a senior role, in line with best practice, with the ability to use logic, reasoning and due diligence when evaluating candidates’ statements and responses.

The following qualities would also be an advantage
  • the ability to communicate effectively
  • the ability to work collaboratively
  • the ability to understand and have regard to advice from others
  • experience of contributing regularly, constructively and with respect for others at meetings
  • a reputation for total integrity and honesty and an ability to act with discretion, discernment, and professionalism
  • the ability to recognise and declare conflicts of interest where they exist
We don’t expect non-IOSH candidates to have the same depth of understanding about IOSH as our members, however we are looking for someone with the ability to gain an understanding of IOSH strategic goals and vision, an awareness of the market in which it operates, and an ability to understand the role of volunteers in our governance structure. Successful candidates will be able to translate these elements into assessment of candidate experience and development of appropriate processes to enable the Nominations Committee to fulfil its role.

What difference will you make?

Our global focus is to support our members to create workplaces that are safer, healthier and more sustainable. As a global player in safety and health, it’s critical IOSH has the best people in its key volunteer positions and the Nominations Committee has an influential role to play in our volunteer community.
