Our mission is to lead the global transformation to modern and sustainable travel. We believe travel is a force for good, opening our eyes, mind and helping to challenge our perspective and broaden our horizons.

To achieve this mission, we need to keep the traveller at the heart of what we do every single day. We have exponential ambitions for our organization and using more in-depth, detailed user research techniques and feeding this into our product is vital to achieving this ambition. This is a critical hire whereby the incoming individual will play a pivotal role in determining the scale of our future success.

The goal of our User Research Director is to give us a “canonical view of the traveller”, then they will unify this view with insights and evangelise it to the whole organisation. Our User Researchers merge the quantitative and qualitative – marrying the two to create this understanding of the travellers we serve. We do not want to do research for research sake, our User Research team works on the most immediate business problems to maximise our commercial bottom-line. Our team are skilled at the Why, the How and the What of making and iterating products to find market-fit. They support each other and help each other grow.

We’re looking for an experienced User Research Director who has delivered significant results at a company-wide level — defining strategy, overseeing complex processes and organisational challenges, hiring and developing top talent and acting as a user research advisor to senior leadership. Naturally data-driven, they nevertheless cut through complexity to identify high impact opportunities and simple solutions. They act decisively on these insights and collaborate with colleagues in ways which inspire and motivate. Above all, they are in touch with the end user, working constantly to understand their pain-points and exceed their expectations.

What You Will Do
  • Find the ‘why’ behind the traveller problem, and communicate this across the business, starting with CxO’s, Tribe-level and the wider company
  • Lead a team of User Researchers
  • Grow the User Research team in a lean way to maximise impact on the product and therefore commercial results
  • Solve for the whole picture – balancing quant and qual to pair the two into a cohesive view of the traveller
  • Help to unify User Research with Insights, which will involve deep collaboration with our data science team
  • Use Lean approaches to break down big ideas into valuable pieces to deliver at a fast pace and coach others on how to do this at scale
  • Take pride in the craft & teach it
  • Help identify and grow future UX leaders through line management or coaching
  • Establish a clear long-term vision for the User Research organisation and embed a model to ensure the ongoing development of the organisation
  • Work in a highly collaborative way across the whole organisation, at the CxO level, to ensure that we continue to optimize processes and enable market growth squads to maximize the impact of Skyscanner in their markets
The Person
  • Experience as a User Research Director / Head of Research in a fast-moving internet company, or equivalent
  • Background in User Research, so you’ll have in-depth, first-hand experience of User Research methodologies, observation techniques, task analysis and how that evolves into broader behaviours, needs and motivations of the user.
  • Experience owning large, complex product initiatives to successful completion, resulting in significant business growth
  • Literacy of the product design process, with the ability to feed insights into the process
  • Experience recruiting, mentoring, and managing top talent
  • PhD, MSc or M.B.A. Ideally these will be a mix of Quant (Engineering/Economics/Maths/Sciences) and Qual (Psychology/Cognitive studies). But we welcome applicants from all educational backgrounds
  • A passion for travel
