Amey Consulting is one of the UK’s leading transport consultants and provides unique ‘end-to-end’ planning, design, construction and operations services alongside other parts of Amey. We have a strong reputation for innovative solutions, grounded in reality, that deliver value for our clients.

We are involved in a wide variety of projects and operations within UK transport, including operation of the Docklands Light Railway and Manchester Metrolink; management of the Valley Lines around Cardiff; and the design and delivery of the Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade between Leeds and Manchester.

Transport Advisory is part of our industry leading Advisory and Analytics (A&A) Services Business which currently enjoys strong fee generation of approximately £20m pa, mainly from working in partnership with key clients such as Network Rail, National Highways, Heathrow Airport and the wider Amey. Our ambition is to double revenues over the next 3 -5 years and Transport Advisory Services will play a key part in achieving this growth.

The Transport Advisory business is formed from a combination of existing businesses from within Amey Consulting, including TPT (transport space management for commercialisation), transport planning and intelligent mobility. These will be combined with our plan to move into transport economics and “Place” to build a creative, front-end transport business, which will be a differentiator for Amey Consulting. We believe our differentiator will be realised by combining these skills with our data and analytic skills and our practical experience of delivery of transport services in the rail, highway and aviation industries.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a Transport Economist to lead and grow the Economics team within our newly created Transport Advisory Services Business, which is a key part of Amey’s £180m pa, revenue and growing consulting business.

Reporting to the Head of Transport Advisory, who is a member of the A&A Senior Leadership Team, the Transport Economic Director will take day to day responsibility for shaping, developing and running our Transport Economics business and be a key part of growing our Transport Advisory business. They will be responsible for successful delivery of projects and growth of the business internally and externally, the former being facilitated by highly collaborative behaviour.

We are seeking an ambitious individual who has an extensive track record in Transport Economics, blended with some experience developing and growing a business. They will have a national remit for Amey Consulting and will be encouraged to shape the business based on their experience, working closely with their peers in the Consulting business. As part of the Transport Advisory business leadership team they will work closely with the Head of Transport Advisory to help develop the business strategy and grow the overall business. They be encouraged to work closely with the leadership of the A&A team with the opportunity to help shape and lead the overall A&A business.

The successful candidate will show potential for further progression in this expanding business and will have a clear development plan in place to support this.

We want to hear from you if:

• Experienced transport economics practitioner operating in the infrastructure sector on significant projects
• Able to demonstrate a high level of experience and expertise in leading delivery within the transport, or economics field
• Has led successful bids – strategy, resourcing, solution development, commercial negotiations and delivery
• Experience leading and managing a team and ideally a P&L account
• Experience growing a business ideally
• Qualified with one of the main transport-related professional bodies
• Driven by innovation, engages passionately with the digital agenda
• Has experience of driving efficiency, effectiveness and best practice
• Capable of acting as technical lead or technical day-to-day main contact for a project where required under the terms of the commission
• Has developed an external profile within the broad field
• Experience leading, growing and managing a team
• Has developed strong client relationships which have led to long-term value for each partner
• Has worked as part of a leadership team.
