Key responsibilities:
- Offering expert advice to councillors and officers on proactive and reactive media handling strategies to protect and enhance the organisation’s reputation.
- Monitor and evaluate media coverage and reporting, keeping key stakeholders informed about the client’s reputation in the media.
- Use appropriate communications channels to reach target audiences communications.
- Contribute to a rolling forward plan of proactive communications activity to deliver a strategic approach to media relations.
- Proactively identifying news opportunities and creating tailored content for a range of on and offline channels.
- Respond to journalist queries in a timely and professional manner, in liaison with service managers, heads of service or councillors as appropriate.
- Contribute to a rolling schedule and forward plan of upcoming media activity for the organisation.
- Monitor, record and evaluate key service data as part of the teams continual monitoring process.
- Develop positive relationships with councillors, officers, stakeholders, partners, and the media.
- Communicate with customers at the required level.
- CIM qualified or working towards.
- Knowledge and understanding of the legislation relating to information copyright and intellectual property issues.
- Specialised knowledge and skills in graphic design (e.g., typography/layout/image manipulation etc).
- At least 2 years equivalent communications or journalistic experience.
- Experience of working in a busy press office, media handling and writing news releases
- Experienced in using a range of communications tools and techniques including traditional media relations and social media.
- Previous experience monitoring and evaluating media activity and coverage.
- Experience dealing with the media and/or public.
- A track record of working proactively with the media and devising proactive communications campaigns.
- Strong customer service skills.
- The ability to converse at ease with customers adapting communication style to suit differing audiences and provide advice in accurate spoken English.
- ICT literate.
- Interpersonal skills and enthusiasm.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally & in writing to a wide range of people.
- Ability to organise own workload to meet targets & deadlines.
