The Risk And Human Factors Group Are Currently Looking For a Senior Risk Scientist To Join Our Team As a Risk Technical Fellow To
  • Provide deep technical knowledge in the principles of ALARP and proportionality.
  • Contribute specifically to national priority areas ‘Delivery of Safe Net Zero’ and ‘Ensuring Resilient Infrastructure’
You will use your expertise to provide technical leadership, develop staff capability in risk assessment techniques, steer the organisation on the management of high consequence low likelihood risk, and support HSE’s Chief Scientific Advisor.

Through the publication of papers and conference (and other) presentations, you will improve and widen HSE’s scientific reputation helping to improve public understanding of risk concepts and raise awareness of HSE’s work.

Responsibilities

As part of your role, you will:
  • Provide technical leadership across HSE on the application of ALARP, TOR and proportionality, and understand their application across a wide range of industries and new technologies
  • Work with other government regulatory bodies to ensure a consistent approach to risk concepts such as ALARP and TOR being applied across government
  • Provide technical/scientific leadership or steering group membership for major international, cross-government, cross-organisational research projects, or other scientific initiatives.
  • Work with HSE science and policy colleagues in updating HSE risk guidance and influencing dutyholders to follow the guidance by raising the profile of HSE’s risk management science, such as presenting risk management concepts and projects to a wide range of stakeholders in industry, wider government, to the general public and international audiences.

Person specification:

You Will
  • Be a nationally recognized expert in the field of risk management with a wide network of contacts in the field of prevention of major accident hazards
  • Have significant experience in the concept of ALARP and TOR
  • Have evidence of mentoring staff and developing highly skilled teams
  • Have excellent communication skills, including report writing and presenting to customers. To be able to work with scientists from a range of disciplines
  • Have a strong publication record including in the development, use and evaluation of consequence models
  • Have experience in leading project teams.
