Main Purpose

To provide effective support to the Depot Manager for technical matters.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Carry out audits and surveys in quality/safety and technical matters.
  • Formulate action plans.
  • Produce systems on quality and safety initiatives within the organisation.
  • To investigate rolling stock incidents, traction casualties on rolling stock that is within the designated area.
  • To supply modification support to the TOC.
  • Investigate technical incidents with a view to providing recommendations to instigate experiments or modification packages to enhance the reliability of the stock.
  • Carry out risk assessments.
  • Internal quality and safety technical audits.
  • Monitor and investigate accidents.
  • Produce safe systems of work, work instructions, local instructions.
  • Ensure initiatives are introduced effectively.
  • Carry out quality, safety and minor technical training.
  • To provide the Depot Manager and his staff technical support services on a day to day basis and recommend actions to improve performance.
  • Carry out regular door lock audits.
  • Attend morning depot performance conference.
  • Compile statistics on a day/period basis.
  • To assist compilation of ME162 incident forms.
  • Monitor overall depot availability to target on daily basis.
  • Regularly audit Traincare performance of allocated fleet to ensure they meet divisional standard.
  • Afternoon telephone conference.
  • NIR reports/reporting and raising forms.
  • Input casualty and defect information to Ravers.
  • Monitor near miss information concerning allocated fleet.
  • Carry our contract reviews.
  • Produce customer complaints and costing records.
  • Produce reports regarding fire on trains and AWS incidents.
  • Maintain and operate warranty system where applicable.

Minimum Requirements

  • The post holder should possess the qualification equivalent to Engineering HNC or relevant formal qualifications in Safety and Quality.
  • The post holder must have full technical knowledge of the allocated fleets and a working knowledge of all other rolling stock on South Western Railway.
  • The post holder must have full knowledge of how the modification process within SWR operates.
  • Associate membership of IOSH and IQA or willing to work towards NVQ level 3.
  • Background experience should either be railway or from outside industry with quality and safety knowledge.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings.
  • Technically competent in electrical/mechanical skills.
  • Practical experience of maintenance requirements of the allocated fleet.
  • Aware of all procedures when dealing with safety of the line incidents.
  • Computer literate.

Shift Patterns

Working an average of 37 hours per week.

Normal hours will be Monday - Friday.

Must be flexible to work nights and weekends as per business needs.
