QinetiQ provides its customers with a suite of services which include advice, testing, research, procurement, supply, preparation and sustainment of client platforms and weapon systems for operational use, assuring safety, performance and through-life cost savings. We apply our in-depth domain knowledge, facilities and specialist expertise to produce trusted, practical, instrumented environments and action-oriented advice that enables clients to make informed procurement and operational decisions with authority and insight.

QinetiQ’s Systems Engineers are in the middle of bringing together technical solutions following best practice through the engineering lifecycle. Systems engineers may operate at whole system level, working with customers on use cases and context of use, requirements and project engineering; or are expert in a sector of the delivery lifecycle, such as design, integration, test, in-service or through life support, with a significant degree of relevant domain and technical expertise. Systems engineers are hands on and core members of the engineering team

This opportunity is to grow our systems engineering team supporting the development of bespoke training and rehearsal systems. These systems typically include;
  • Development of simulators and their integration into wider training systems
  • Integration of synthetic, live and constructive capabilities for training and rehearsal activity
  • Development of bespoke exercise systems across air/land/maritime/space domains
  • Integration of military voice, video, information and communications systems
  • Integration of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality into training systems
  • Build of distributed networked systems for experimentation and training capability
  • Integration of systems and information across security levels
  • Build of demonstration and prototype systems
Roles are available at variety of levels, from graduate through to technical leadership.

The role is within QinetiQ’s Systems Engineering discipline, which provides a broad network across the business and supports your professional development and technical interests.

What will I be doing?

You will be working hands on with project teams across QinetiQ, working with teams at NSC, MOD ranges, and customers in maritime, land or air domain, often through our Training Centre of Excellence. You will primarily be working with colleagues from across project management, software, networks and communications, human factors and simulation. You will often work as a connection point across workpackages and disciplines, ensuring the whole comes together, whilst also having a specialism yourself.

As the systems engineer you maybe looking at one of more of overall architecture, requirements, use cases, work structure, sub/system specifications, statements of work for partners / suppliers, interface definition, design traceability, safety & security, integration, test, verification, certification and transition to service. You will have, or are able to rapidly assimilate relevant knowledge of the specific software, hardware and information protocols in use, as well as security requirements and approaches.

Projects may be simple or complex; you may be working within the project team or as a work package, project or programme technical leader. You may work directly with the project manager and be involved in defining and tailoring the project delivery; several are moving to or actively use Agile approaches, particularly for experimentation and demonstration systems.

What do I need?

You are likely to have an interest in simulation or gaming, MOD training, rehearsal or experimentation. You will have, or an ability to rapidly assimilate, knowledge of relevant technology solutions and systems considerations when integrated together into an overall capability. This might include experience in the context of operation, or in design, integration or test of a system including:-
  • Simulator interoperability standards including Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) and Higher Level Architecture (HLA).
  • The creation and enhancement of Synthetic Environments covering the generation of visual databases both generic and real world along with 3D models of lifeforms, vehicles and structures.
  • The creation of secure networks to integrate simulator components/subsystems over both LAN and WAN including the build, configuration and test of simulation client and server systems. This would include physical, virtual and cloud based systems.
  • The rapid integration of remote sites, their equipment and entities into a Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) training environment.
  • The generation and control of man in the loop entities as well as scripted/autonomous computer generated forces (CGF) using inhouse and Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) to control and stimulate training exercises.
  • The use of COTS technologies such as virtual and augmented reality hardware and display systems and COTS software simulation or gaming systems (e.g. VBS, Unity, Unreal, VR Forces, etc.).
  • Communications and Information Services (e.g. tactical radio/datalinks or wider command and control infrastructure)
  • The ability to log and replay simulation exercises using Gods Eye View tools for After Action Review (AAR) to provide visual and audio replay of events in a training environment which facilitates active discussion between trainers and trainees both locally and remotely.
You will have experience of writing/contributing to technical documentation/models and delivering outcomes in compliance with relevant regulatory, safety and technical standards.

You will have a track record of using systems engineering methodologies, and be, or aim to be a practitioner in many of the systems engineering technical and management competencies.

You will understand self, respect differences and draw on strengths to support teamly and effective project delivery.

Qualifications
  • Relevant professional engineering qualification (e.g. CEng / ASEP / MSc / BSc) or equivalent working experience
  • Membership of appropriate/relevant professional body, e.g. INCOSE / IMechE / IET
  • Engineering delivery experience using systems engineering methodologies and knowledge of technology / domain space.
Please note that all applicants must be eligible for SC clearance as a minimum.
