Support Worker – Student Disability Services

Student Disability Services, within Cardiff University’s Student Life Division, are recruiting a Support Worker to provide support to disabled students to enable them to participate in their university studies. You will be expected to carry out a variety of tasks such as notetaking, support when visiting the library, orientation, and practical assistance getting around campus.

In addition to the above you will also be required to undertake a variety of routine administrative duties to support the team and the department.

A high level of professionalism is expected when undertaking this role.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term until 31st August 2024.

The post is semester time only and you will be contracted to work 37 weeks during each academic year. The academic year runs from the end of September to the middle of June each year with breaks at Christmas and Easter.

Salary: £18,212 to £19,623 per annum, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 2)

Job Description

Key Duties
  • To assist disabled students with notetaking in lectures and providing a high-quality set of legible notes, both handwritten and typed.
  • To assist students around campus, such as library support, practical assistance, and general orientation.
  • To support students with practical teaching sessions such as laboratory work and field trips.
  • Take an active role in the team supporting team objectives and other team members, contributing to the training of new team members at support worker induction.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels
  • Deal with both simple and more complex enquiries from students in a professional manner, following established procedures, referring complex enquiries to relevant staff members, ensuring all relevant facts and information needed is recorded and passed on.
  • Undertake a variety of routine administrative duties to support the team and the department
  • Gather and record data in order to maintain accurate student records.
General Duties
  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties
  • Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
  • Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role

Qualifications and Education
  • Basic Numeracy and Literacy (GCSE grade A-C / NVQ Level 2)
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience of working in a service delivery environment.
  • Experience of using common office IT packages (e.g., MS Office)
  • Proven high standard of organisational and general administrative skills, demonstrating a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Ability to deal with customers and other employees in a professional manner
  • Ability to clearly record information to pass on to others
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible and to work effectively as part of a team
Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and organise own workload within established time scales
  • Ability to identify problems using own initiative, determining which standard process and procedures can be used to solve them

  • A willingness to undertake further training and development
