Internal Candidates Only - Assistant Student Funding Adviser

With the highly anticipated opening of the new Centre for Student Life it is an exciting time to work within Cardiff University’s Student Life Division. The Student Funding & Advice team is part of the Advice and Money service within the Student Life Division. We are seeking to recruit an experienced Assistant Student Funding Adviser with a background in providing professional customer care to students and visitors with knowledge and experience in student finance and welfare advice.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to provide accurate and confidential advice on statutory funding available to UK and EU students. This support may be in person, over the telephone and/or via e-mail. They will be expected to complete casework to a high standard as is appropriate to the client’s needs and those of the institution. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining accurate case notes and statistical information as required.

To be successful you will have knowledge and understanding of student funding systems and welfare services. You will be required to provide advice on undergraduate and postgraduate funding for Home and EU students both prospective and current (including Healthcare funding) and in accordance with the University’s Widening Participation remit. Your duties would include a range of matters including, but not limited to, advising students considering changing, suspending or leaving their course and the impact on their funding, fees and on the University process. You will be expected to keep up to date with all relevant legislation relating to student finance and the University academic regulations, policies and procedures.

You will also be responsible for delivering talks, workshops and publications to students, the public and staff throughout the University.

The post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.

Job Description

Key Duties
  • Provide professional advice and guidance on student funding and student welfare related issues, processes and procedures to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Investigate and analyse specific issues within student funding and welfare advice, creating recommendations, supported by advances within student funding regulations.
  • Ensure that the provision of student advice is delivered to the institution’s staff, students and prospective students, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements using creativity and judgement.
  • Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  • Supervise specific project teams on an occasional basis to accomplish key objectives.
  • Develop and deliver training and presentations on student finance and welfare related issues.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University within student finance and welfare issues as required.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience (1 year minimum).
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Substantial experience of working within a student funding advice setting.
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge of the student finance regulations and welfare advice issues to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to set up standard office systems and procedures and make improvements as appropriate.
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people (prospective students, their parents, current students, across the Student Funding and Advice team and other staff).
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
  • Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with a range of potential outcomes.
  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within student finance and welfare related advice.
  • Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines (remotely and within an office environment), planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others and monitoring progress.
Other
  • A willingness to undertake further training and development.
Desirable Criteria
  • Postgraduate/Professional qualification.
  • Experience of working with Cardiff University Academic Regulation policies and procedures.
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
