Salary: £39,748 to £44,166 per annum (dependent on skills and experience). A Specialist Allowance of up to £2,000 per annum is also available for this role.

About Us

The Ada Lovelace Centre (ALC) an integrated, cross-disciplinary data intensive science centre, for better exploitation of research carried out at our large-scale National Facilities including the Diamond Light Source (DLS), the ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility, the Central Laser Facility (CLF) at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) we are a team with a cross section of expertise, from around the globe and our work environment encourages open dialogue and discussion in a productive and friendly manner.

About The Role

As a Software Engineer / Computational Scientist in STFC Scientific Computing, you will contribute to ALC aims by linking X-ray diffraction data, collected at DLS beamlines, with data processing and structure solution pipelines in CCP4 Cloud, a novel front-end for the CCP4 Software Suite, which underpins structural biology research on global scale. CCP4 Cloud is built on top of STFC Cloud and IRIS Digital Research Infrastructure and provides structure solution software and services to several thousand molecular biologists.

About You

You have developed IT/computing skills and a passion for applying them in scientific environment. Self-motivated, self-driven, with good communication skills and an excellent team-player, you can conduct projects that require interaction between IT and research teams across different organisations. You are good in communicating internationally and address to requests promptly, keeping to agreed deadlines. You have a general interest in diverse scientific disciplines and see a value and reward in helping thousands of researchers by developing and maintaining an advanced scientific computing infrastructure. To be successful in the role you will need the following

Essentials

Working knowledge of Unix system fundamentals and common network protocols

Experience managing Linux/UNIX systems in a heterogeneous environment

Good working knowledge of server-side JavaScript, Python and shell scripts

Experience deploying and maintaining virtualised environments

Experience of cluster software and databases
