Software Developer - Computed Tomography SolutionsRutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire
Salary: £31,931 - £34,709 or £39,748 - £44,166 per annum (plus annual role-based allowance of up to £3,000)
Full time
Fixed Term 3 Years
Based at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) the Central Laser Facility (CLF) is building a new laser centre - the Extreme Photonics Applications Centre (EPAC) and is seeking new team members to help to build this and to contribute to our existing facilities. EPAC is an £81M facility that will use lasers developed by our team to drive new types of novel particle and radiation beams that can be applied to a wide range of problems in science and industry.
We are looking for people like you, developers at all stages of their careers to be a part of our friendly and enthusiastic team. CLF will have a hybrid working arrangement with the option of partial remote working.
About The Role
One of the main applications in EPAC would be Computed Tomography (CT) with the x-ray and particle beams it would generate. As far as possible, we will make use of established solutions for data pre-processing and tomographic reconstruction, with a user interface being built by the Collaborative Computational Project in Tomographic Imaging (CCPi). However, specific modules will need to be developed because of the unique properties of EPAC beams. The software also needs to be integrated with EPAC’s other systems.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Contributing to the design of the Computed Tomography solutions for EPAC.
- Implementing modules for pre-processing image data before CT construction.
You will have a degree or equivalent experience in computer science, software engineering, or a strongly related STEM subject with significant software development experience.
In addition you should have a strong background in programming with experience in C#, Python or similar languages. Experience in parallel computing and an awareness of the principles of Computed Tomography and/or Image processing would be useful. Experience working with scientific or industrial image processing, particularly with CT or radiographs, would be an advantage.
The role requires the candidate to be self-motivated, to work well in a team and to be able to operate independently. You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a highly organised approach to work.
About The Central Laser Facility
The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is one of the world’s leading laser centres, providing scientists mainly from the UK and continental Europe with access to an unparalleled range of state-of-the-art laser technology. The CLF has around 180 staff and its function - user facility, international research - makes it a very friendly, outgoing, externally facing sort of place. It has a welcoming and inclusive culture, and you will find that people will naturally help and support you.
As part of UK Research and Innovation, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations and operates at a number of sites within the UK, including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and many more around the world.
Employee Benefits
We are offering a fixed term position that provide a whole host of family friendly benefits including; 30 days holiday (in addition to bank holidays), an excellent pension scheme, employee shopping/travel discounts, a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme, plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have a great work life balance.
UKRI is an Equal Opportunity & Disability Confident Employer.
To Apply
Applicants are required to include a cover letter detailing your suitability for the role.
The closing date for applications is 18th July 2021, however applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
