Applications are invited for a temporary (2 year) Band 6 Healthcare Scientist Specialist post in the Aberdeen Genetics and Molecular Pathology Laboratory. This UKAS accredited laboratory is part of the Scottish Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine, funded by National Services Division to provide genetic and molecular pathology diagnostic testing in Scotland.

Experience and qualifications

Applicants should have a minimum of an Honours degree in a Life Sciences discipline (preferably related to the specialism) and working experience in genomic methodologies across molecular and / or cytogenetic workflows. This should include complex techniques such as NGS and/or microarrays.

The successful candidate will undertake preliminary analysis and reporting in a range of genetic based disorders. Applicants should have working experience with a range of IT software including analytical packages.

Excellent communication and time management skills and meticulous attention to detail are a pre-requisite for this post. In addition, applicants must have experience of following standard operating procedures and working to deadlines under pressure. Flexibility to accommodate changing service demands is also required.

Previous NHS laboratory experience as well as an understanding of diagnostic accreditation standards, and experience of LIMS and genomic based software packages will be advantageous.

There will be considerable interaction with other staff groups within the department including administrative, technical and scientific staff.
