About the role


Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Secondary Design engineer - HV Substations to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business based in Leeds.

Role Purpose:

  • The main function of the role is to design the protection & control design for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV.
  • The role also includes the General design, Planning and Procurement responsibilities as detailed below for delivery of substation projects.

We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.


What you’ll be doing

  • Identify all relevant standards and Customer requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National / International Standards and legislation, and contract specification.
  • Sound knowledge of AIS and GIS substation design up to 400kV.
  • Prepare and review P&C design e.g. SLD, KLD, Scheme drawings, interlocking, wiring diagram etc.
  • Sound knowledge of proposal and optioneering design as per customer requirements.
  • Prepare P&C design calculations e.g. voltage drop, setting calculations, CT/VT sizing and other P&C design calculations.
  • Familiar with electrical and mechanical interlocking philosophy
  • Produce tech specs and engagement with supplier for their offer validation.
  • Design work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary, to fulfil the Company obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations.
  • Examine contract documentation and establish the Company scope of work including termination boundaries. Where this differs with the tendered contract requirement then these differences should be highlighted to the Project Manager.
  • Attend and contribute to Design Review / Contract Close-out Meetings, ensuring that appropriate items are actioned in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with Designers and CAD technician on drawings requirements.
  • Initiate the preparation of all required drawings and approve all drawings to be submitted for customer / sub-contractor interface.
  • Interface with other discipline e.g. civils, HV plant, HV cables and OHL engineers
  • Protection solution FAT witness knowledge is desirable.

General Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with standard Company Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Procedures and Business Process Manual;
  • Contribute to the development and training needs of the Design Team as appropriate to skills level / experience.

Planning Responsibilities:

  • Upon contract award, liaise and co-ordinate contract requirements with Project Manager, customer, external suppliers and other Balfour Beatty Departments at earliest opportunity.
  • Establish Design content of work package and the Design resource to achieve the required time scales, in line with detail design programme.
  • Effectively control, update and report on progress throughout contract life, giving estimates to complete and highlight potential resource problems to Design Manager / Project Manager / Engineering Manager.

Who we’re looking for


Personal Qualities and Experience:

Education:

  • HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or higher, Graduation in Electrical engineering is desirable.

Experience:

  • At least 10-12yers exp in substation design engineering
  • Liaising with customers and suppliers;
  • Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components;
  • Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs;
  • AUTO CAD working experience is essential.
  • experience in substation design calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs.
  • Microsoft Office Packages.
