As the Senior Project Officer, you will work alongside NHS Scotland Facilities Directorate, providing input on best practice for supporting walking and cycling in the design of new and existing healthcare facilities. You will also provide subject matter expertise to ensure Health Boards have appropriate guidance as they need to develop and implement policies to facilitate more active travel.

  • Contract: Permanent (subject to funding)
  • Location: the post holder will be principally based at the NHS Scotland office in either Gyle Square in Edinburgh or Delta House in Glasgow, with the flexibility for some homeworking.
  • Full Time 37.5 hours per week – happy to talk flexible working. We are happy to discuss working hours to suit individual circumstances, however due to the embedded nature of this role, we have found that it is difficult to complete the duties outlined in the job description while working fewer than 32 hours per week.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to work with Sustrans providing expertise within NHS National Services Scotland to ensure NHS sites across Scotland are accessible for walking, cycling, and wheeling.

As the Senior Project Officer, you will work alongside NHS Scotland Facilities Directorate, providing input on best practice for supporting walking and cycling in the design of new and existing healthcare facilities.

You will also provide subject matter expertise to ensure Health Boards have appropriate guidance as they need to develop and implement policies to facilitate more active travel.

You will build and manage internal and external relationships with key people such as the NHS Assure Sustainability Manager, NHS decision makers, and partner organisations such as local authorities.

The post holder will work with the NHS National Services Scotland for at least four days a week.

Up to one day a week may be spent with Sustrans Scotland at home or office-based to undertake training and development and to collaborate with other colleagues.

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans.


About you

You should have experience of working with senior management and steering committees as well as experience of stakeholder outreach, consultation, and engagement.

Ideally you will have demonstrable experience in a relevant discipline such as transport planning, sustainable transport, health disciplines or environmental health.

The successful candidate will be able to build relationships with ease across a wide range of people at various levels (including senior management), as well as the ability to persuade and influence key stakeholders and decision makers.

We ask you demonstrate your knowledge of the various impacts that active travel can have on health of individuals and communities and the knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice relating to active transport modes.
