Overall Purpose

The Project Manager provides leadership through effective project management for large, complex UKAEA projects. The Project Manager is accountable for the delivery of substantial projects of great importance to UKAEA. They will be expected to make strategic & technical decisions regarding project schedule, budget and resourcing requirements and show delivery-focused leadership to a matrixed project team.

Accountabilities
  • Providing leadership on projects from concept to delivery in line with UKAEA technical management systems and project governance, including regular reporting and proactive stakeholder management of internal and external customers.
  • Provide expertise required to develop a Project Management Plan with the Project Sponsor that defines how the project will be delivered
  • Lead on strategic project decisions regarding the budget and resourcing
  • Ensure effective deployment of project resources, through clear definition of roles and responsibilities, working methods and the sequencing of tasks
  • To evaluate, present and make decisions that secure the benefits the project is tasked to deliver
  • Overseeing effective communication within the project and assist the sponsor through interactions with stakeholders, defining the project milestones and deliverables.
  • Reporting of progress against milestones, changes, exceptions, budgets and other key performance indicators.
  • Ensuring that the project SHE culture and working practices are in alignment with the UKAEA requirements.
  • Managing project document development for a project lifecycle in compliance with the UKAEA’s Quality Assurance requirements.
  • Ensure lessons learnt are captured and applied from projects and that regular lessons learnt sessions are held to embed them through the life of the project implementing mitigating strategies
  • Inspire project team members, instil good practice and transfer knowledge. Provide mentoring to team members across projects.
  • Resolving obstacles to strategy delivery and leading the identification and employment of creative solutions to overcoming them
  • Ensuring all project activities are undertaken in a systematic manner with a Systems Engineering approach at the core of the technical solution to project objectives.
  • Ensuring successful project handover to the end user, including relevant documentation.
  • Set and monitor standards in area of specialism and manage risk effectively. Responsible for signing off the work of others in area of specialism.
  • Liaising with other Groups and Departments to ensure effective co-ordination and collaboration across interfaces and competing demands.
Budget Responsibility
  • Providing robust management of project(s) of budgets of up to circa £25M
Essential

Specific Qualifications/Experience:
  • Significant demonstrable experience of leading and delivering complex engineering projects, developing and embedding major business improvement programmes to budget, time and cost mitigating project and technical risks
  • Engineering degree or equivalent qualification
  • Passion for ensuring good project management practices and culture
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and through the production of written reports
  • A Proactive approach to safety, with good appreciation of UK compliance requirements in design
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to make sound economic decisions that maximise project value
  • Good background knowledge and understanding of operating in a technology and / or engineering environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to enable effective working relationships to be developed with people in a wide range of roles and levels of responsibility
  • Familiarity with modern standards in the areas of Safety, Health and Environment, and Quality Assurance
Desirable
  • Professional project management qualification or working towards
  • Good background knowledge and understanding of fusion science
  • Chartered status in relevant STEM discipline
