Role purpose
  • To generate and improve manufacturing processes for new and existing products via improved understanding, and to support manufacturing processes and projects to meet Business targets. To utilise plant information efficiently to identify improvements and to implement change using the principles and procedures for good change management.


Accountabilities
  • Manage activities in compliance with site, company and regulatory requirements, e.g. COPs, SI’s, HSE policy and standards, COMAH (Health and Safety Executive), PPC (SEPA) etc. Use knowledge and experience to improve ways of working safely in conjunction with Dept Safety Leadership.
  • Progress development initiatives to improve technological and manufacturing capability, cost and SHE performance, under the direction of the principal process chemist or group leader, in support of the techno-commercial strategy of the Supply Chain and Development.
  • Proactively advise development and manufacturing personnel and arrange laboratory support work to assist in the solution of manufacturing process problems and opportunities so that results can be implemented.
  • Track, analyse, and interpret production data (key parameters, cycle times, reaction profiles, product quality). Derive new process understanding and opportunities from trends identified.
  • Communicate with commercial, research, manufacturing, development and HSE functions to assist in the direction and monitoring of development work.
  • Provide expertise in process chemistry to Process Development, Supply Chain and works project teams to permit formulation and execution of development plans to meet Supply Chain targets under the guidance of +1 Manager
  • Ensure project data and information is stored in an electronic format and prepare technical reports and memoranda to record and disseminate the results of experimental programmes and laboratory work programmes.
  • Develop, train and coach subordinates to improve their performance and achieve higher professional standards. Influence strategic process technology projects.


Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

Critical knowledge
  • Chemistry: Educated to at least Honours Degree standard, possibly PhD, OR to HNC or HND level with >10 years of relevant experience.
  • HS&E: Knowledge of systems and QA procedures and responsibility for compliance.
  • Supply Chain and financial awareness: some knowledge of the impact of development work on Supply Chain performance and business value.
  • Awareness of the competitive position with respect to the areas of responsibility including some knowledge and possibly contact with external academics in own science area.


Critical Experience
  • This concerns the type and minimum length of relevant experience required to effectively perform the role. This includes experience/familiarity with particular processes or systems, dealing with certain products or services, and/or the experience of dealing with others - both internally and externally.
  • Substantial experience and knowledge of process development chemistry, critical data analysis (statistics/experimental design), scale-up, plant establishment, manufacturing support.
  • Comprehensive experience and knowledge of laboratory/ analytical work
  • Substantial experience in manufacturing support activities including process monitoring, data analysis and information extraction with a track record of problem resolution and process improvement implementation.


Critical Technical, Professional And Personal Capabilities
  • Problem solving: Ability to analyse complex and diverse problem situations creatively leading to the generation and implementation of original solutions
  • Management: time management, team management and meeting skills, work planning > 4 weeks self and reports
  • Laboratory/analytical: Comprehensive experience and knowledge
  • Literature and data-base searching and the ability to collect, collate and interpret complex information
  • Communication: Ability to convey the right level of detail to the right audience verbally, in writing, or by presentations and ability to judge when and who to communicate key information.
  • Networking: Able to maintain and extend networks internally and with other parts of the organisation and contribute constructively to teams in order to meet targets.
  • Physico-chemical awareness: ability to apply physico-chemical concepts to process development including use of specialised data analysis tools.
  • Detailed knowledge of the application of site Management of Change procedures, ability to act as technical assessor for changes to plant or processes. Awareness of potential implications on product quality - compliance with specifications, formulation, regulatory, etc.
