Senior Healthcare Technical Officer

Job Summary

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Specialist Services Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) provide a range of diagnostic and reference services to meet the needs of patients and those who treat them.

The H&I department in Filton provides testing and support services for stem cells, immunogenetic diagnostics and the provision of the National Platelet and Granulocyte Immunology service.

Working in this laboratory, you will provide vital support to scientific staff in a role that includes sample reception and separation, reagent preparation, DNA isolation and assisting with laboratory testing. You may also be relied on to update donor and patient information and to generate computerised reports or worksheets should the need arise.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be required to perform a range of scientific and technical activities related to blood (and where appropriate, tissue) samples from patients and donors, with the support of the team
  • You will be required to handle samples and to use a range of equipment
  • You will assist with the support and training of new and less experienced staff
  • You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and samples and to carry out routine tasks on a regular basis
  • Daily manual handling of equipment weighing up to 13 kgs will be required, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of supervising others
  • Experience of working with Information Technology such as Microsoft Office

Qualifications and Training

  • Level 4 qualification e.g. BTEC or HNC in a relevant science subject, NHSBT Foundation Degree OR equivalent knowledge and experience of working in a laboratory, manufacturing or other environment requiring intermediate level theoretical knowledge acquired through formal training
  • Evidence of furthering personal development
  • Willingness to undertake further training and development
