Job Summary

Embark on an exciting journey with us as we seek experienced Healthcare Assistants brimming with enthusiasm and motivation to join our vibrant Ophthalmic team. In this dynamic role, your responsibilities will span the entire spectrum of the Ophthalmology department, seamlessly transitioning between clinic and ward shifts.

You will be based at the Royal Preston Hospital Eye Unit and the Lancashire Eye Centre at Chorley Hospital. The latter stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence, boasting a state-of-the-art facility designed to redefine the standards of eye care.

You will be given full training and expected to complete core specialty training as part of the role and must be committed to completion of this within the required time frames.

GCSE’s in Maths and English at Grade C or above (or equivalent) and an NVQ in Health at Level 2 (or equivalent) is essential in order to apply for this role.

Main duties of the job

You will be forward thinking, well organised with a positive attitude towards flexibility and change. In addition to development of clinical skills, you must be committed to completing the required academic courses that form part of this role.As well as a wide range of clinical responsibilities you will also assist in preparing patient notes for their surgery and giving general administrative support. We are looking for a candidate with a good set of interpersonal skills who will fit well into our existing team.

One of the primary responsibilities involves the collection of various biological samples from patients for diagnostic testing or dispatch. This includes obtaining samples such as urine, sputum, faeces, MRSA swabs, and blood sugars. The process of sample collection is crucial for accurate diagnosis and the development of appropriate treatment plans.

Additionally, healthcare professionals play a vital role in assisting patients to meet their nutritional needs in accordance with their individual care plans. This involves a comprehensive understanding of each patient’s dietary requirements, preferences, and any specific restrictions or considerations. By aligning nutritional support with individual care plans, healthcare providers contribute to the overall well-being and recovery of patients, ensuring that their dietary needs are met to support the healing process and maintain optimal health.

Person Specification Knowledge & Experience Essential

  • Previous experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
  • Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
  • Understanding of concept and application of confidentiality
  • Understanding of the role of a band 3 senior HCA

Qualifications & Education Essential

  • oGCSE Maths & English grade C or above / Grade 4 - 9 OR Functional/Key skills level 2 numeracy and Functional/Key Skills level 2 literacy
  • oBNCS or NVQ / Internal Level 2 training programme Must be willing to undertake Trust internal Level 3 training programme course
