Responsible for managing the comprehensive mechanical/electrical and building fabric services to all buildings, wards and departments in a multi-disciplined environment; ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures. To improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users.

Responsible for ensuring safe systems of work are in place and maintained in line with HTM, HBN and recognised codes of practice by carrying out Authorised Person Duties for Lifts, Ventilation Systems, Working at Height, Water Systems and Pressure Systems (this list is not exhaustive) following training, assessment and formal appointment by the Trust.

Plan and organise major interruptions, maintenance activities and manage work of directly employed labour and contractors’ staff. Provide practical training and guidance to others and evaluate work.

Lead and manage the team of Estates Managers and also directly employed labour in line with all relevant Trust Policies, undertaking disciplinary and attendance management investigations, providing detailed investigation/management reports.

Deputise for the General Manager, Estates & Facilities as required on the full range of management duties as well as providing technical advice to other Estates staff and contractors.

Main duties of the job

You will be experienced in hard services estates management with a engineering background who will be able to project manage, monitor works and compliance and lead and manage a team.

You will be responsible for the implementation of professional management throughout facilities & estate engineering and building operations including planned maintenance, defect maintenance. Support the Estates & Facilities General Manager in the implementation of policy and service development. Deputies for the Estate & Facilities General Manager in his/her absence.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • HNC/Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or construction
  • NVQ3 in Electrical Installations/Mechanical systems/Buildings Maintenance equivalent experience in a building services/estates management environment.
  • Previous experience in managing directly employed staff and contractors working on breakdowns and PPM on technical mechanical / electrical or building disciplines found in a hospital environment
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering/Construction
  • Completion of an industry recognised approved apprenticeship and qualified to HNC/HND in a mechanical, electrical or building discipline
  • IOSH or similar Health and Safety Management

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Extensive Knowledge of highly complex Hospital Technical Memorandums (HTM’s)
  • Substantial post qualifications experience in Electrical or Mechanical services
  • Understands and demonstrates the importance of effective communication with department heads.
  • Able to work within confined spaces
  • Able to work safely at heights
  • Able to prioritise own workload
  • Able to understand and comply with the requirements of the Trust’s H&S policies (subject to suitable training)
  • Able to work as part of a team and co-ordinate work with other trades.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven extensive estates operational experience within an acute hospital environment
  • Training in electrical or mechanical services and/or building fabric as appropriate

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of health and safety issues within a healthcare environment
