Senior DevOps Engineer

Salary: £50,702 - £56,336 per annum (depending on experience)

Job Purpose
The Digital Services team are part of the Digital Data & Technology (DD&T) directorate of UKRI Corporate services. The team is responsible for building, delivering and iterating the digital services used by UKRI in pursuit of their organisational goals. DD&T is a key enabler of a major transformation programme within UKRI where 9 councils are transforming to represent one large organisation responsible for driving research and innovation across the UK economy. Digital services are core to providing a modern and enabling interface between UKRI and its stakeholders.
This is a key role within a technology-focussed team, with the successful DevOps Engineer required to define, implement, manage and maintain the hosting environments working with suppliers and other stakeholders as applicable to ensure fit for service architecture/processes are delivered.

Experience Required

Processes and standards -
  • Extensive experience of Agile software development and working in SCRUM teams
  • Define, implement, manage and maintain the hosting environments required to support UKRIs strategic objectives for platforms and hosting
  • Working with suppliers and other stakeholders as necessary to ensure fit for service architecture and processes are implemented
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships with third party suppliers and employees
  • Operational management of infrastructure and applications
  • Building and configuring new server platforms and infrastructure, using automated tooling to do so
  • Testing, debugging and troubleshooting of platform level problems
  • Supporting development teams configuring applications for deployment
  • Assessing the DevOps maturity of the organisation and identifying/implementing improvements as applicable
  • Identification and development of resources to establish a sustainable internal capability for long term DevOps and hosting needs.
Technical background -
  • Substantial experience in System Administration predominantly in CentOS and RHEL with skills in networking / routing / load balancing and VPN configuration
  • Strong scripting and language skills i.e. Ruby, Bash, Python, Java
  • Substantial experience in public cloud implementations - creation of and migration to
  • Understanding of common web application architectures
  • Experience of using automated environment build tooling e.g. Terraform for Infrastructure as Code and Ansible for Configuration Management
  • Experience of Securely building infrastructure within the AWS cloud using AWS technologies such as lambda, S3, EC2, IAM, EBS, Elastic Beanstalk, Route53, SES, RDS, Elasticache, Autoscaling, Load balancers, VPC, etc.
  • Working experience of databases, such as Oracle/PL­SQL, SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL, NoSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB, DynamoDB)
  • Experience of core technologies such as containerization(docker), container orchestration (Kubernetes/RedHat OpenShift/Fargate), Vagrant/Virtualbox, CoreOS and GlusterFS
  • Experience of working with Development Teams to deliver optimal continuous integration and continuous deployment strategies.
  • Experience debugging pipelines and operational issues
  • Installation and management of COTS/open source monitoring tools such as Splunk, Nagios, New Relic, AppDynamics, ELK
  • Working experience of other software such as Jira, Confluence, Stash, Nexus, Artifactory, SonarQube.
