Purpose


The Senior Design Engineer develops and delivers civil engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering designs, for transmission networks projects (132kV and above), including earthworks, access roads, control buildings, plant support structures, foundations, drainage and all other associated civil works.



The job holder provides necessary basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for projects, innovation, effective technical support, advice and input throughout the lifecycle of the project.

Responsibilities


  • Perform all duties with a strong emphasis on health, safety, quality and environment compliance, innovation and continuous improvement
  • Advise on the development of pre-contract design and delivery of projects by leading/supporting the technical aspects of civil engineering works
  • Assess engineering documentation, feasibility, compliance and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects. Advise on construction and outage programmes, when required, in relation to civil engineering works
  • Prepare basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for concrete foundations, access roads, steel structures, drainage and buildings associated with networks transmission projects
  • Define civil engineering requirements for input to System Construction Authorisation (SCA), and Technical Specifications
  • When required, provide technical assessment of tender submissions, and report recommendations to Project Unit teams
  • Prepare/review drawings and specifications for construction/procurement
  • Ensure civil engineering designs and construction practices are in accordance with current legislation, policies and operational requirements
  • Provide technical support to Project Unit teams on matters concerning the design and construction of civil/structural elements of the works
  • Maintain an awareness of technological advances and industry best practice. Assist with evaluation and apply ‘new ideas’, technical developments, new equipment and alternative-working methods to provide cost savings, efficiencies and improved safety
  • Contribute to training needs assessment for new products and standards etc and the development and delivery of technical, construction and safety training packages
  • Liaise across multi-disciplinary engineering teams to provide end to end integrated solutions

Skills and Requirements


  • Chartered Civil Engineer or working towards membership of an appropriate professional body
  • Knowledge of carbon management, sustainability and circular economy relating to energy sector
  • Knowledge of BIM and its benefits
  • Proven experience in a responsible position and knowledge of civil engineering works required for electrical network transmission projects
  • Skills in use of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Autodesk AEC package, Staad Pro, TEDDS, MX Road, Microdrainage
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses
  • Knowledge of health & safety requirements in particular compliance and CDM
  • Knowledge of National Grid technical specifications
  • Proven experience and knowledge, in a responsible position, of the following, at various voltages:
    • AIS
    • GIS
    • Substation refurbishment
    • TX installation


To be successful in a role you will need to demonstrate as minimum:


  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with relevant experience
  • UK driving licence
  • Flexibility in working hours to meet the needs of the job
  • Requirement to undertake short trips away from home as required
